Someone I have worked with in the social media world recently went off on his own to start his own company. As if that weren’t enough, he thought “Hmmm… I think I’ll write a book.” Chris Dessi’s Your World is Exploding: How Social Media is Changing Everything was a surprisingly inspirational read. When first glancing at the title, I thought this book would be more about how to use social media from a business perspective. At times, these types of books can be text book-like and a bit hard to dredge through. As a social media marketing professional, I have read much on social strategies, how to incorporate social into marketing plans, what platforms do what and what tools work best, etc. (blah, blah, blah). I was pleasantly surprised in reading Chris’s book– he did exactly what he should in terms of social media. The fundamental principle of social media is being social, interacting with people, and being personal. I love that he told his story in terms of how he was personally affected by social media– in his career and in life. For someone who is caught up in the everyday world of social media marketing, like myself, I think it’s important to take a step back once in a while and remember this is about people and how they connect. If the old way of marketing is about telling people about a product, the new way of marketing is about finding out how people engage around or connect with others regarding the product– and listening to those people, servicing them and changing the product to make it better for them. Chris’s passion for social media and for life is infectious, bringing the reader back to the basics, showing the importance of everyday connections and how social media can help. A fast, easy read that keeps you engaged and is truly inspiring– it’s worth a read!
