As a beginner I found myself looking for a book that could introduce me to SQL querying and perhaps a bit more. I bought 2 different books and they were utter garbage until I decided to invest into this one. Third luck is the charm.
The big plus is the simplicity of the book and examples used. If you follow examples you will have no problem reaching even intermediate level of SQL knowledge. The minus is that there are some chapters that were, by my opinion redundant. Those chapters cover the administration of databases and all charming stuff that goes with it.
However 80% of the book is useful, thus 4/5.

As far as programming books go, this was one of the better ones I've read. It's well-written and uses diagrams and screenshots in just the right ratio to text. There are helpful notes and asides that provide some real-world context to the topics. I also very much appreciated when the authors called out which features were new, which features were deprecated, and provided notes on considerations for backwards compatibility. I did a lot of SQL Server work from 2000 to early 2008, and these notes helped me to easily see what's been added in the years and versions since.

As far as the material that is covered, this book starts with basic database concepts, covers T-SQL syntax with some notes on optimizing your queries, and then proceeds to briefly touch on pretty much every advanced feature that is available--including Analysis Services, Reporting Services, and Integration Services. The authors give you a summary of these more advanced features, a few examples, and then move on. There are entire books about each of these topics, but it was very nice to get an introduction.

Overall, it was oddly enjoyable to read this book. I'm a geek.

This is the perfect book for a beginner. This book goes fairly deep and will require a lot of effort from a beginner to read through. After reading through this book, the beginner will have become the master.

The work experience of the author is flowing through the different scenarios described in these books. Most of these scenarios, problems and solutions are gold for a beginner to know and apply on the job when necessary.

Would definitely suggest this book to a beginner.
