"Counting in the Desert 1-2-3" is a counting book with a desert theme. Children will be drawn to the appealing cover art freaturing meerkats. Although children will enjoy the photographs of the varied animals featured, this volume is flawed as a concept book.

Concrete thinkers being introduced to counting must have examples that are unambiguous. For example, for the number two, an adult bird and a baby bird are shown. There is also something in the background that could be mistaken for a bird (a plant with a pointed, split top very similar to an open beak?). In some of the othe volumes in this series, each photograph contains a caption to identify the animals in the picture; that is not so for this book.

The series is ostensibly about counting, but the titles in the "read more," section all focus on desert animals. would have been more well rounded with the inclusion of some related counting books. With a word count of 24 and only 23 pages (ten of which are photos), an index scarcely seems necessary.

The three suggested websites focus on desert biomes. It would have been nice to have at least one website included that featured interactive counting activities.
