A quote starts each chapter in the book and I felt it was the way to start this review.
"Everything we go through in life is like a string of color, which pulls us this way or that." She said as she crossed one sting over the other. "That's how come we get so twisted in life. Can't grab our own strings and pull them in the direction we want them to go. No, we allow someone to not only hook us but to sting us along."
The plot follows 4 women and the men around them. Simone, a talented young singer but as she learns about her family and past she has to consider how far she will go for love now. Naya a jazz singer, who has built a world around her that seems to be falling down around and and now she really has to face secrets of her past. Mona, has to face the secrets of her past with all the changes that are happening around her, but how much damage has she done and can fix it now. Misty, has lived her life one way and thought one thing for so long when she finds out that might not be all the truth is she going to be able to face the changes she knows in her heart she needs to make.
The plot of all of these character's lives are entwined throughout this whole plot. There are moments where I couldn't keep them all straight and sometimes I still am confused by their pasts and how they are all related. But, it is in a good way, a way that I know they all go together and know that their relationships will work out together.
The confusion worked in this plot for me. It drew me in to the plot as I wanted to see all the elements work out. And see how all the characters grew, learned and faced what they need to through the plot. I would give this book 4 stars, but I do still need to read it again to make sure I understood all the elements.

Synopsis:
Simone, Naya, Mona, and Misty all have a connection they find through circumstances. Naya suffers a great loss in her life but might find something more if her heart is open to it. Mona has secrets and is afraid of what those secrets might reveal to the important people in her life. Simone makes an important discovery about her past but will she have courage to move forward? Misty has made enemies in the past but can she make peace? This novel focused on the ability to forgive and move forward. The phrase strings of color was used often in this novel. The definition for strings of color to me is the circumstances that come with your path through life. We all have choices on how to handle these different colors or circumstances. What will our path be? Will we choose to love instead of despising the people in our lives?
My Thoughts:
I liked this novel. I found it easy to read. I could also identify with many of the characters struggles. I found the subject matter of this novel heavier than I expected. I loved the way the author handled these topics with grace and perseverance. I did feel that I was missing something from not reading the previous books. Overall I felt this was a good book to read and become totally engrossed in.
Forgiveness is a main issue in this novel. How do we forgive those who have caused us great pain? Can we move past those circumstances? I wonder what colors would be associated with the strings of color?
Wowzer! What can I say about this painfully beautiful book of lies, deceit, secrets, pain, and love? I can say read it and experience The Strings of Color for yourself. How can one family experience so much pain? It was beautifully written. I don't know why but every time I picked up this one to read, I could hear Lalah Hathaway singing on the background of my mind. This book is not for the faint of heart and not for those that are struggling with any type of sexual abuse but if you can believe in hope and healing...pick it up and hear the music of forgiveness!
This was a great series (The Color of Jazzmyne, My Father's Colors, and Strings of Color). There were a few discrepancies (I.e. The timeline of characters, twins names changed from book 2 to 3, etc.), but it doesn't take away from the important issues dealt with in the story. I could not put these books down. I look forward to reading more of Marian L. Thomas' books.
