Complacency Of The Learned

Rate this book
Complacency of the Learned features the androgynous young apprentice, Calmasis, who throughout the series plays the roles of antihero and chief antagonist. S/he convinces fellow disciples to rebel against Zazzerpan's vaunted Complacency, and one by one hunts down each wizard. All twelve are killed but the Predicant Scholar himself, forcing a showdown.

The cover depicts the notorious chess match between Calmasis and Zazzerpan. Zazzerpan had a reputation for being unbeatable. He had never lost a match, even to the gods. But his apprentice was able to beat him in the wizard's duel by first becoming checkmated, and through some unprecedented enchantment, continuing to play beyond the death of the king.

I'm really enjoying this read and I think it deserves a little review from me. I started reading this book earlier this year and although I haven't been able to finish it yet, everything I've been able to read has dazzled me. I love introspective readings with a quite notable philosophical value in their narration and this book is no exception. I have never been a fan of fantasy and although this book has elements of that caliber, anyone who is not interested in fantasy can still enjoy reading it. Of course, I do not recommend it to those who detest concepts that are a little beyond the common ones, although the book has a deterministic and somewhat cynical character, it also focuses on more metatextual and confusing concepts that could make you feel a bit lost. I'm really loving this work and I hope it doesn't decline with each page I turn. I seem to remember that this is the only book the author has published and honestly, it's a shame we can't see more of Rose Lalonde. Her writing is so delicate and descriptive that, at least for me, it has inspired me to start writing and I hope more people have certainly felt inspired after reading this.
