The key that will open worlds lies inside the belly of a dog …
Since Max, the dog, swallowed the key to enter every dimension, the worlds are no longer safe.
Firstly, the warlocks themselves will do everything in their power to get hold of that key. That’s a problem because they’re both awfully powerful and awfully evil.
But they’re not the only ones who want the key. A mysterious new contender has entered the realm, and if he or his lackeys get hold of the key every single one of the seven dimensions are doomed.
Which means it’s once again down to Ben the Dragoncat, his dragon, and his dragon rider companions to save the day. This time, though, they have a whole load of unicorns to help out, as well as a feline cat goddess from an ancient time, not to mention the oldest and wisest fairy of them all …

I was granted complimentary eARC access to A Cat's Guide to Travelling Through Portals by Chris Behrsin through the author's own mailing list in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much for the continued early access to this great series! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.
Picking up shortly after the conclusion of book four, all of our adventuring friends still left standing at the end of the previous book have made it back to the academy, and it's time to welcome some new initiates ...none of whom are human. Unfortunately for all present at the celebration, word quickly comes that Arren is still up to no good trying to get new dog friend Max's swallowed key that opens every dimension so that he can unleash a new flavour of evil on the 9 dimensions, and it's up to Ben and his friends to save the day again. This round's adventure features a lot of messy love lives, including a new love triangle situation for Ben, and the introduction of some new but familiar faces from our dimension's ancient mythology.
I adore this series, and this instalment did not disappoint! The plot itself, the actual adventure, is solid, fun, and not too challenging to follow as always. Ben's very dry takes on the world and people around him never fail to make me laugh ("sounded like an orchestra of a thousand blenders") and the various shifts in intercharacter relationships and individual character arcs in this book are really well done. We do get more tidbits about character backstories and how magic works in this version of the world. It feels like this series is shaping up to be one of those longer series comprised of smaller series with contained plot arcs of a certain multi-book length, and in this case, it seems to be coming in trilogies. A Cat's Guide to Travelling Through Portals is book five and it feels like the middle of a trilogy in terms of where the Max and Arren plot picked up and left off. Now, don't get confused by the term "middle" here. This book does NOT suffer from middle book syndrome!
For readers who are just coming across the Dragoncat series, don't start here, but please do read this series! This series should be read in order from book one, with the prequel novella slotted in whenever you get a chance to read it, but at the very least you're going to want to read book one (Ben introduction/world concept) and book four (start of this plot arc) before reading book five.
There are three new dragon riders selected and two are ones those familiar with this series knows- the third is unknown but on the journey they, Ben and some of his friends and allies take, Ben gets entangled with the new rider and that dooms the life he dreamt of having with Ta’ra since she was also one of the new dragon riders and witnessed his dalliance with Esme.
The group encounters demon dragons, foxes and the overlord of the seventh dimension before being whisked away to the faerie dimension where Ben and three other dark magic users are tasked with tracking a former prince gone bad and retrieving Max’s soul from him. With all the encounters he still gets away letting us know that they will meet again in a future book!
To enjoy this book more fully, you really need to read the entire series up to here so you’ll know what has already happened. Otherwise you’ll know you have missed a lot of the story!
I recommend this book and series to all those who love animals, especially cats since they play such a pivotal role in this series! It’s a great fantasy and one I think you’ll enjoy! In fact, after the read you may just find yourself using Ben’s phrase:”Whisker’s”, what a ride!
I received a copy of this book at no charge and am leaving an unbiased, honest review.
Another fun, action packed book in the Dragoncat series.
These are a bit hard to review; because I don't want to say the same things over & over again, & I want to give you more than a plot summary. This is the 6th in the series I've read (there is a 0.5 prequel), & lives up to the standards of the others.
The story line of the series is a cat named Ben is catnapped from his home "dimension" & taken to a dimension where magic is real, & people & cats ride Dragons. The plotline focuses on Ben & his new friends & their quest to wipe out the evil of Dark magic Warlocks & the evil "7th dimension". This book introduces ancient Egyptian Gods to the universe, & brings back 2 evil & powerful Warlocks, one of whom everyone thought was dead.
The series is narrated from Ben the Cat's point of view, which makes for some entertaining moments, & I have to admit Chris has me hooked; I NEED to find out how it ends (though I know that in 99% of fiction books, "good" eventually wins out over "evil").
This is perfectly appropriate for both kids & adults, depending on the child's reading level (The author suggests 8-18).
Recommended, especially at the current low pricing!
Thanks Chris Behrsin and Bookfunnel for this free ARC in exchange for a review.
I devoured it in a day! Much like that yummy salmon, it's irresistible.
Book 5 in this series has the same charm and action as I've always enjoyed about the other books. Whether or not I get an ARC next time, I'm on board to continue this series.
If you're looking for a 5 book (so far) all ages fantasy adventure series, well at 42 I still read those 😆, and this one has all the action and charm needed, plus some mystery too.
The main protagonist is a cat who was stolen through a portal from Wales to another Universe, and he becomes a dragon-rider, makes friends with
Please get back to basics, and kindness to felines!
CGTP is fun, Behrsin does not disappoint, but I miss the quaint quirkiness of the earlier books. The series has become overloaded with metaphysics and deus ex machinas. I want details on obtaining salmon and cream, what are the domestic arrangements, what has Ben taught his new companions and are why the cats still mistreated and locked in the cattery!!! If Ben is such a hero, why doesn't he stand up for normal cats?!?!? He may discover that, like Esme, they are far from mundane.
I love the adventures of Ben the Dragoncat with his new companions Max the dog and Esme, who is a very special cat. This book is an easy read with laugh out loud funny parts as well as exciting battle scenes. The saga continues with the next book, where Ben has to go learn more about himself from the white mages. This book deserves a five star rating because of all the actions of all the characters in the series and does so in a manner that keeps you from becoming confused! ;-D
The book continues the story of an reluctant accidental cat who enters a world of dragons and warlocks and all he wants is to eat and not become a hero. It was a great read and I was tottally astonished by the quality of the story that leave you hanging from the start to end, and keep you wanting for more....
Another realm destroying battle between dark and white magic is brewing
Dragoncat finds himself in the middle of changing tides of fortune. Before this battle complehtes, many will risk their lives to fight, and some of Dragoncat 's companions will be separated. How will the future unfold? Only time a nd the crystals will tell.
Always an entertaining story line although there were a few slow spots in the action I didn't like; but this is a great series and I won't miss the next book. Go, Dragoncat, go!
