Born to the beautiful 'Cuckoo of Calcutta' and later ' Cuckoo of Karachi' - Dollie and Evander, Zara lost her mother at birth. Her father looking at the circumstances of her mother's death became cold to her instantly and the girl never knew affection craved by a child ever. When her father remarried, her step mom Kezia, producing 3 sons herself, sent her off to boarding school, where after her senior year she found love in Daniel - this love appeared as a respite from her quenched years and their love leaving her pregnant even as Daniel has to leave the country.
.
Probably in the biggest injustice rendered to her, her first born is swapped by own father and she is transported to Manjooran, to her aunt on her mother's side. For the first time she finds strong parental love and as gratitude to her maternal aunt she marries her uncles nephew and starts a family there.
.
Her life in Manjooran with her four children and their lives then are drawn out well, till, their lives are too are that of grown ups.
.
All through the political scenario of the country is a focus in the book and Zara herself becomes a part of it. The changes in scenario, lifestyle, ways of thinking and divided affections of a human is very meticulously written by the author such that times you yourself sometimes become Zara as a daughter, as a lover, as a wife, as a mother and overall as a woman in the society! The Calcutta connection on Zara 's maternal side obviously tug at my Calcuttan heartstrings too.

.
Read the book to enjoy a solid character driven story and to find out how Zara ' s life comes full circle! The abstract cover adds to the enigma of the book.

I often enjoy character driven stories more than plot driven. For a reason that I get to immerse in the protagonist's head and see their life shaping and shifting. This is one such book which I found more about our main character, Zara and the events that take birth around her.

With the historical events tucked rightly at the back seat, the story is driven so smoothly and it goes back and forth where we see so much unfolding and then Zara's side of the story.

I don't want to give so much away from the story because I believe that readers who love literary fiction would enjoy this Saga so much because of its rich language and impeccable way of storytelling.

Zara's life has been full of highs and lows. Right from her birth when her mother reached heaven and left her, Zara's life shifted significantly. Nursed by nannies and her step mother, Zara became eluded and chose a way for herself. When she gave in to her passions of being loved and desired, a flower bloomed which caused her to carve a way out for herself and a new life created by her. There's agony and pain, torment and suffering, loneliness and sorrows but Zara is all alone with her little one who she named, Babette.

There's a lot that happens as a story never ends and there's always something after the other to keep us going on and move ahead in life. Zara gets married and gives birth to Children who would later grow up and make some mistakes only to regret, but aren't we all like this?

The Author's knowledge about the History of World is outstanding and there is immense research that has gone in writing this book. Since the book is a literary fiction that has a lot of History too, it's only recommended to people who are interested in the genre. New readers aren't advised to pick this book as it will not be a right choice. As a lover of words, I loved this book wholly and I loved the character of Zara at every point.

One of my favorite genres of literature is Partition and post-Independence India. There's so much to learn from those kinds of stories, resilience, fighting for rights and justice, and navigating lives during a tumultuous period. Most of the books that I have read so far talk about the people who have actively participated in the freedom movement, rarely did I come across a book that narrated the journey of other common people who didn’t actively join the movement. This is one such book.
Vectors in the Void talks about Zara, a resilient young girl who stood up for herself amidst her dysfunctional family. Zara doesn’t belong to a political leader’s family but to those who didn’t have many issues with colonial rule. Lives of those surrounded with cultures similar to London more, than that of India. looking at history from a very different view gave me a fresh perspective. This book isn’t about the violence that happened during that period be it partition or world wars rather shows how it impacted the lives of individuals, on a personal level.
Our protagonist shared her entire life in this book, from losing her mother during her birth, never fully understanding what her father’s love is, finding love, moving across the country to start afresh, and starting a family of her own. She talked about how the country changed with the years passing by and so did her views about society. She shared her inner conflict and the pressure of constantly being strong so that her family doesn’t fall apart.
While this is quite a lengthy book but the engaging writing style of the author and gripping plot structure never tired me out instead, I was left craving for more. Overall, this is a very promising and inspiring book to read.

Vectors in the void
Author - Giselle Mehta
Genre - Historical Novel
Pages - 312

There's a void in everyone's life, some people created cocoons to protect it from others and it is also a necessity. The void place is not just only void but it becomes a very personal place to rest, a trinket to be cherished and to be protected.

Women are here stoic. Giselle Mehta created her women as women of substance.
Gissel's women are made with complexities or the society and life force them to build complexities that's a real question.
These women build walls around them, they grow with age and layers of complexities, to know them you have to go through the layers you have to read the full novel.

It's a story of love, loss, grief, searching for identity, and a strong, bold woman.
Against a backdrop of colonial India, this story starts with Dolores or Dolly, she didn't want to be a mother, she was a splendid beautiful actress who was busy building her own strong ground beneath her foot.

One night brings catastrophic change into her life. Marital abuse or dishonoring wasn't really illustrated as a crime, those days were different. She couldn't really take up the abuses and day by day became weak, and she died while giving birth to her child. Dolores didn't want to be a mother, she didn't want to be a wife, she was a different woman, and Zara, her daughter became exactly opposite to Dolores.

Zara fell in love while in her boarding school. Zara wanted to keep her baby as a respective symbol of her unfulfilled love but her father kept the baby with him and told Zara that her baby was born with few days of life. That is the way Zara's father wanted to protect her. Zara went to her aunt and again started her studies, later married Vivan. To know what happened next you have to read this novel. To explore the life of Zara you have to go through every layer of the story.

This is a brilliantly knitted novel that is compelling me to read it thoroughly. Giselle's characters separated from each other slowly and intertwined stories creating a beautiful patchwork of life. The story is carved with layers and she uncovers them elegantly.

I loved her language, which is elegant and sophisticated. The yarning feeling Giselle emphasized is infectious. Giselle poses great narrative power and eloquence. It is richly sublime and brilliantly portrayed.

The historical background and the ambiance is well developed. Execution of the characters is unfolded with the sheer brilliance of art. Seamlessly her story reached its' end, giving us the utmost joy of reading a great novel.

The diversity of the story would make you feel compelled and profound. It's an ode to womanhood.
It's a heavy read that span across generations with deep intricated relationships.

📎 The plot is established in the 20th century. The story commences with "Dolores"- a young woman who's getting married. However, her life took a sharp turn and her dreams developed cracks due to her rancorous experience of post marital abuse by her spouse. She didn't want to be a wife or a mother. However her daughter Zara, the protagonist, is a completely juxtaposed character.

📎 Zara, born during the Indian freedom struggle in the Backdrop of colonial India, A free spirited and strong willed individual. She has experienced several cardinal segments of History: the Holocaust, Birth of three nations, the Sino- Indian war etc. The plot revolves around Zara's journey from an innocent school girl to a mature old woman and a Grandmother. Her adrenalizing journey includes a lot of adventure, bitter sweet climaxes and anti climaxes which unfolds itself in various veneers. Her complicity in business and swatantra party politics is a noteworthy episode.

📎Zara is an extremely dynamic character who explores a lot in life under varied circumstances. She became a resilient woman steering through love , loss, and complexities of parenthood.

📎 There's a magnificent fluidity of historical events into Zara's story amalgamating her personal life with the contemporary events. And the historic events and the characters mentioned are literally well researched and curated.

📎 Another important frame of event is her post marital family dynamics where Zara is projected as a mother of twin daughters with contrasting needs.

📎Overal the novel explores mystery, suspense, shocking revelations and also adds a layer of thrill by uncovering a connection with a celebrity in London generating adventurous fillips.

♦️ Constructive criticism:

1. Most of the people who doesn't have a knack towards history might find certain parts of the story 'repulsive' where as for some it might act as a strait that marks their entry in the realm of history.

2. Lack of illustrations.

The protagonist, Zara, is an ambitious woman. It's the story of a girl who, despite having no mother and growing up in a poor family during a time of intense political strife, manages to break through every barrier in her way and accomplish her goals. It's the tale of a heroine every young lady aspires to emulate. The story takes place during the time of national separation and follows regular people as they go about their daily lives. The plot is interesting and engaging, and the writing is beautiful.

The book has a lot of potentials because it has both drama and amusement. This book is perfect for you if you enjoy reading about influential women in the past. In a masterful exhibition of storytelling, this epic weaves together characters and settings from different cultures and periods.

The novel's strong character development is one of its many strengths. All of the characters are expertly represented, but especially the main ones; they are so real to the point that you forget they are fictional. Zara was my favourite part of the story. She is an exemplary person and a source of motivation for others. Her poise and determination in the face of adversity are inspiring. Giselle Mehta's expert handling of her characters' interpersonal dynamics makes for a riveting read. Real life begins to look dull compared to the richness of the world created by these characters as they learn from one another, exercise influence over one another, communicate with one another, and interact contextually.

Vectors in the Void is an outstanding piece of literature on every count. There isn't a single pointless or meaningless sentence in there anywhere.

Overall, I will highly recommend the book.

VECTORS IN THE VOID - GISELLE MEHTA

4⭐

PLOT - Zara's birth came at a very turbulent time during India's freedom. Her life has never been easy and when a passionate evening as a school girl happens her life forever.
She gets married and she learns to balance her life while holding the fily business and her love for politics along with raising four children each as different as the other.
Zara's life has been nothing but an adventure and when she comes to know of a truth which was buried for long how will it affect her life and of those near her?

MY THOUGHTS -
This is a compelling saga of Zara - her life from a child to being a grandma. A formidable woman in times when India was struggling for freedom she held her fort not only in business but even politics while single handedly raising her children.
Zara as a character is essentially a free spirited person who has many shades.
For most part in her youth she is flawed and biased esp in regards to her children which in turn are affected by this in their lives somewhere doing them injustice but she does get to redeem herself and does so effortlessly with passion and love.
Coming to the writing its an extremely well written story with a rich use of vocabulary intermingled with well researched historical events hence it would take time for a novice reader to get into the flow of the book. The character growth of practically all the main characters are phenomenal and quite insightful too.
Definitely recommend this work of fiction set around true events happening in and around India which also has elements of literary fiction in the mix.

A journey of a woman, through ups and downs from the days of goodness, young times to old days. Zara is that woman who survived partition, wars and a lot. Not a warrior, neither a soldier, she is the woman around us, from the daily sphere of life.

The stories with strong characters like Zara inspire me and make me the happiest. She fought against all the odds to survive. The plot is beautifully curated, with a linear plot and a subtle writing, I enjoyed the story.

The author has made sure to add the flavours of different situations for the protagonist to make it worth reading.

I recommend this book to the people who are a fan of reading woman protagonist.
