Giuseppe Antonio (Presepio Presepi) Patrignani (Moltalboddo, 22 febbraio 1659 – Roma, 15 febbraio 1733) è stato un gesuita e poeta italiano, storico della Compagnia di Gesù e autore di sacre rappresentazioni in versi.
Scrittore, educatore, drammaturgo, Patrignani fu anche poeta fecondo, e scrisse i suoi versi quando la poesia barocca marinista, illanguidendosi, volgeva al rococò. Pubblicò opere in versi anche con lo pseudonimo Presepio Presepi. Con identica facilità scriveva in italiano e in latino.
La Santa Infanzia di Giesù Cristo in teatro. Rappresentazioni, e trattenimenti drammatici fu edita a Firenze da Michele Nestenus e Antonio Borghigiani nel 1708 (2ª ed. 1713). Conteneva testi teatrali in versi, sulla nascita di Cristo. I dialoghi erano arricchiti da brevi canzoni, tratte da un libro dello stesso Patrignani: Sacri trattenimenti di canto, e suono per l'Avvento e per il Natale. Le canzoni erano eseguite in coro, oppure da singoli personaggi, come San Giuseppe, la Vergine e il pastore Elpino. I Sacri trattenimenti erano stati pubblicati in 2ª edizione, a Firenze, nel 1706 (3ª ed. 1711, 4ª ed. 1724). Non è rimasta traccia della 1ª edizione.
Con l'opuscolo I Vantaggi della scuola pubblica sopra la privata dimostrati in una lettera di riposta al signor conte N. N., pubblicata con pseudonimo Ottavio Piceno nel 1728, Patrignani si pone alle origini della moderna Pedagogia.
Visse trentacinque anni a Firenze dove, per trenta anni insegnò Grammatica nelle Scuole inferiori del Collegio Fiorentino della Compagnia di Gesù. Qui è verosimile che abbia messo in scena, con i suoi giovanissimi allievi, le sue sacre Rappresentazioni. Nel 1731 fu chiamato a Roma, per scrivere il Menologio di alcuni padri Gesuiti, e a Roma si spense. Oltre ai versi, i Sacri trattenimenti comprendevano gli spartiti musicali di 27 arie per l'Avvento e per il Natale, a una sola voce su basso continuo, scritte forse in funzione di un coro di voci bianche. Sembra che Patrignani sia stato anche Autore di queste musiche, poiché nei suoi libri non c'è alcun riferimento a un musicista. In nessun suo libro è presente un suo ritratto.
Nel 1837, a Modena, usciva Il cuore ammaestrato di Gesù Bambino sotto vari simboli in madrigali del Patrignani. La sua sensibilità per la musicalità si manifesta anche nei 161 sonetti del libro La musica contemplativa nelle quattro settimane degli Esercizi Spirituali di Sant'Ignazio, data in luce con pseudonimo Presepio Presepi, stampata a Lucca nel 1712 e nel 1713 e quindi tradotta in francese, in tedesco e in spagnolo.
Le poesie e canzonette di Patrignani ebbero fortuna. Alcune furono ripubblicate, senza spartito e senza indicazione dell'Autore, in varie edizioni ottocentesche della Biblioteca per li parrochi e cappellani di campagna, che era un vademecum a uso dei sacerdoti che vivevano in provincia. Delle opere del Patrignani esistono numerose edizioni ottocentesche. La canzone natalizia Poiché Maria si può ascoltare su YouTube, nella interpretazione del Coro Amici della Musica di Fumane (VR).

I wanted to learn more about St. Joseph this year, and this work did aid in that. The author is VERY into him, so the admonitions that Joseph should be everyone’s patron for everything were a bit wearing.
I did learn many traditional beliefs regarding the life and death of this often hidden saint. It also provided some insight into mid nineteenth century Catholicism as well.

This book contains so much splendid commentary and observations on St. Joseph. It’s divided into 3 books: the first covering St. Joseph’s traits and patronages, the second detailing miracles and testimonies of saints and various people, and the third offering practices and prayers.
The first section is the most accessible and gives ample reasonings for the virtues of St. Joseph. The author really loves this saint and will give countless reasons for devotion (especially toward the end). This book partially influenced me in choosing St. Joseph as my confirmation saint. I think the second book can drag, especially because it directs itself to people in the religious life most of the time, but if you have greater patience and knowledge of the religious I’m sure it will be more profound and effective. The third book has a lot of useful prayers and meditations, with an entire devotion for the month of March, alongside confraternity prayers, prayers for the Mass, hymns to St. Joseph (in Latin), and other dedications for feast days and the Triduum.
The first and third books provide strong reads and practices which I see myself returning to next year. I originally rented this book from my library, but since it has a lot of calendar devotions I recommend owning a copy if this interests you. It’s a slow burn, in my opinion, and serves better as a constant read over the year.
One last note: I recommend this book as a devotion for the month of March. Skip to the calendar section in the 3rd book and then follow it’s directions — it will guide you through the book on a day by day basis leading up to the feast of St. Joseph.

Awesome. Probably the best St. Joseph book I've read so far (I haven't read many..). I really enjoyed the "Life and Glories of St. Joseph", but this one was even better. Or just different. I think both books belong together. They both approach the subject from totally different angles. This one starts off incredibly, in the style of the Sinner's Guide, with several chapters of motives for devotion to St. Joseph. That part is priceless. Followed up by stories and examples, introduction to various confraternities and devotions to St. Joseph. The preparations/novenas before his feast days also contains some excellent writings on his virtues etc.

St. Joseph has been a patron in our family for generations. My favorite Patrignani description of St. Joseph is his angelic obedience to God's will, something I aspire to daily. In addition to the collection of prayers/novenas here, the descriptions and discussions of Joseph as example in so many different ways (e.g., Jesus, Mary, Church, Religious Orders, Princes, Kingdoms) and patron of agonizing as well as various people's experience of him are rich in consoling detail.
