I've had this book for a number of years still hoping to make it over to Dublin to follow Joyce's footsteps (or at least to the places that still exist). It is beautifully arranged to correspond with each chapter of the novel, complete with chapter summaries and photos as well as biographical and social commentary. In addition, when consulting this volume while reading the novel, the reader is able to visualize all the peregrinations of Bloom and Stephen as they make their way around their beloved city.

A small book packed with interesting information on the locations in Dublin related to James Joyce's Ulysses. This is the book you want tucked in your knapsack when in Dublin and wanting to explore the routes taken in the novel.
Each chapter follows the route taken in the corresponding episode. In addition are notes on name changes that have occurred over the years, changes in landscape and things to look for. As well, instructions on which buses or routes to take to get to an area. One area also warns of travelling through it alone; not the best part of town....best to go there during the day.
A wealth of interesting information in such a slim book.

In Ulysses, James Joyce goes to extremes to get the historical details correct. He gives us street names, the names of buildings, shops, people that were real. In this Walking Guide, Jack McCarthy allows us to see the places and buildings where the events in the novel took place. And if you can get to Dublin, you can use it as a guide to retrace the steps of the characters. Great pictures and information for anyone who enjoyed the novel.
