I skimmed through this one thinking that it would be highly technical and dry. And parts of it were more skimmable, such as sections on the geomorphology and vegetation of each island in the Hawaiian chain with seabird colonies (there's quite a few islands) and the conservation-focused chapter, which detailed relevant government agencies and legislation. But most of the book was about the BIRDS and although highly technical and reference-like I still thought it was really neat to have so much detail about know the morphological and behavioral distinctions between the species of shearwaters, boobies, noddies, storm-petrels, albatrosses, and more. Seabirds live a baffling life at sea in search of scattered patches of fish and squid- at least most of them can land on the water when they need a break. Disparate from humanity's typical realm, they are a mysterious clan, but it was great to have what is known collected in this volume.
