19th and 20th Century Women Poets

Rate this book
This selection of more than 100 women's poems by six women poets offers the chance to compare women's writing across two centuries. The featured poets are Emily Bronte, Emily Dickinson, Eavan Boland, Carol Ann Duffy, Elizabeth Jennings, and Sylvia Plath. Individual poets' introductions provide insight into each selection. Supportive notes accompany each poem together with critical approaches on topics such as relationships, the spiritual perspective and the poetic voice. Students are given help with more detailed study of rhyme, rhythm and form and encouraged to see the links and contrasts in the writing of these women poets.

Great selection of poems, especially the ones for Elizabeth Jennings and Carol Ann Duffy. I adore their works.

I found the approaches used for interpretation to be a mean of a deeper understanding of the verses, as well as helping to see the texts in a different light. The questions raised in the notes are certainly worth considering, offering the reader serious subjects to think about.

This is a gem of a book that I picked up at a Literature Conference. The featured women poets are Emily Bronte, Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath, Elizabeth Jennings, Carol Ann Duffy and Eavan Boland. The distinctive feature of this collection are the accompanying notes for EACH poem, the background of the poets and suggestions to approach the poems thematically for further study.
