From my point of view, the only reason why this book was written is the author's self-promotion. Of course, the author does not write about it openly, but an attentive reader will notice that there is a lot of the author's "I" in the book. The book paints the author as a very advanced marketer and that he and his consulting firm are the ones who should be approached if any company wants to build a "new marketing." The author's whole idea with the so-called "new marketing" is to convince potential clients that he is not just offering consulting services on marketing but that he is offering consulting services on "new marketing." And this is already a completely different positioning of the firm against the background of all other similar offers, isn't it?
In fact, the reader will not find any so-called "new marketing" in this book. All "new marketing" is reduced to classic marketing in the changed conditions of the XXI century. In other words, due to increased competition, or rather due to the emergence of more and more competitors, it is no longer enough to simply offer quality goods but a closer relationship with customers and the need to create and strengthen branding. But this cannot be called "new marketing." It is a normal response to the changing situation in the world due to the development of technology, changes in society, etc. The author, however, under the usual and completely natural evolutionary changes in marketing and business means a phantom "new marketing" that he has completely invented. In fact, it is still the same classic marketing, just subjected to natural changes or adjustments to be relevant to the changed market landscape of the XXI century. Here is a quote from the book, which best characterizes the absolute artificiality of the author's theory of the so-called "new marketing."
"The new marketing involves a commitment to exactly this kind of brand renewal: creating cultural ideas that fit into an existing 'molecule' but give it new interests, twists, and combinations." At the moment, Guinness' initiatives include importing the drink from Ireland (rather than producing it in the UK) and bringing back the toucan - a remake of their advertising symbol. That's why I call it a new brand ethos: it's about constantly creating new ideas, keeping the brand relevant and dynamic."
If the author's concept of the so-called "new marketing" is worthless, then what else is in this book? Unfortunately, there is nothing, absolutely nothing, in this book that is valuable or important for long-time marketers as well as newbies and/or students. The main problem with the book is the empty filler, meaningless sentences, paragraphs, and entire pages. For example, pages like this:
"An outstanding American example, in my opinion, is the Ian Schrager hotel chain. These hotels offer a unique and memorable sensory experience from the moment a customer walks through the doors of, say, New York's Royalton Hotel and into the confined space of an incredibly stylish and bustling cocktail bar. And no reception desk within sight!"
...
"What do you make of a chief steward busy choosing one of the 20 service surprises available to passengers on a Virgin Atlantic airliner? Perhaps today it will be a movie with free ice cream, and tomorrow it will be the turn of an incredibly large bag of popcorn."
These two paragraphs are located on one page and are a description of the trends of "new marketing," which the author writes about, denoting this trend with the word "sensorama." As we can see, the ideas given by the author are meaningless and do not demonstrate any "new marketing" in any way. Moreover, it cannot even be called a new marketing strategy. These are just tactical changes, nothing more. However, the author presents such tactical changes as a new marketing paradigm. Ridiculous!
But perhaps the most dreary thing about the book is the numerous pages on which the author writes briefly about various products and brands. For example, he talks about Penguin pocketbooks or United Distillers gin. What is so important and remarkable about them? Nothing! Just that in one case, the author writes that the book publishing company has found a new format for its books, and in the other case - a new sales channel (British bars, where this gin has not been sold until now). What does that mean? It means the author is just rewriting marketing brochures, and that's about it. And that's what most of the book is filled with - A sea of different examples, which are completely uninteresting and meaningless.

This definitely goes as one of my favorite marketing reads. Marketing is not just icing on cake now, it is the cake. New marketing delves into more consumer-centric strategy. Sometimes going against the norm is the pragmatic way to understand the consumers, and create a successful (million-dollar) campaign. This was published a decade ago, but it’s always good to read about some marketing campaigns that brought change to the industry. It’s like reading marketing history. Very well-written to emphasize the evolution from trad media to the anatomy of digital advertising.
