This illustrated account of painters from the 1600s shared a lot more about The Netherlands than just the painters. Seeing The Night Watch in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and then having it described in detail in this book was very interesting. Seeing one of the ships flying a flag with three X's (on the page about sailing vessels of the time period) was more meaningful after seeing these same three X's all over the place in Amsterdam and learning that they stood for no more fire, plague or flood.
