After the events of the previous book in the series, Lure of the Wild, Nate King and his new Shoshone wife Wynona, along with his mentor who goes by the moniker, "Shakespeare" finally arrive at the big Rendezvous. The meet a variety of people including other trappers, Indians of various tribes, and merchants intent on making obscene profits. The Rendezvous is supposed to be a peaceful place, a sanctuary of sorts where men meet and trade, swap stories, gain intel on the best trapping locations, drink, gamble, etc. But Nate manages to find himself in all sorts of hot water, especially once folks find out he is the man behind the "Grizzly Killer" moniker. His reputation is growing rapidly and it seems he needs to be tested. But, of course, things get out of hand and Nate finds himself in a fight for his life.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this long-running western series featuring mountain man Nate King. They are chronological so far and I definitely recommend reading them in order to get the whole story. I don't know if they continue to be that way or if they morph into more stand-alone stories or not. For now I'll make sure to read them in order.

I owe my love of reading Mountain Man novels, a niche in the Western genre to the late Terry C. Johnston and his beloved Titus Bass character.

This was a series published under the now defunct Leisure Westerns, part of Dorchester Publishing, written by David Robbins using a pseudo name David Thompson. Being a former club member, glad to have part of the Wilderness series, and excited to see that it's back in print as ebooks. Since I've found, finding the editions of the Wilderness Series that I lacked, extremely hard to find used and still in decent shape.

It's July, the towering Mountains in the distance from the Bear River are still snowcapped and wild animals roamed abundant. Coming from a southwest direction, they'd be on the trail for a while now. finds Shakespeare McNair, Nate King and his Shoshone wife Winona are headed to the Rendezvous to trade for goodies they'll need for the coming year.

I really like "Savage Rendezvous" a lot, liked how the author David Robbins adds historical events into the storyline, the legendary Jim Bridger appears in the storyline multiple times, he adds a few twists and turns to this one, injects a little mystery, although it's easy too figure out whose been killing fellow mountain men for their money and wish that the ending wasn't rushed. Could have been released as a Giant Wilderness edition, which where longer in length than the normal Wilderness editions.

The best part of this one is, that most of the book is set at the Rendezvous which just adds a lot to the storyline, plus Shakespeare, Nate and Winona are all likable characters, that are brought to life by the author and he puts you the reader right into the storyline.

Rendezvouses were supposed to be peaceful events but Shakespeare and Nate encounter violence on the way and after they arrive. His beautiful native wife tends to attract too much attention. Kill or be killed seems the order of the day. The books may have their audience since this series runs to 71 volumes but I’ve had enough for the present.

A fine entry to the Trappers way of life. Shal we say way of Entertainment. as in the Rendezvous for a month or so. A beautiful Squaw is involved so you know where the story will go but it's the trip not the destination.
Recommended if you like Frontier stories. I do.

I enjoyed this story much better than #2. The setting of the rendezvous and the antagonists were much more interesting this go around. And I also think Nate's progression as a man of the wilderness is much better and believable. On to the fourth book!

This is another of the Wilderness series--Excellent! I have been listening to these on my MP3 player and downloading them from Kansas library. It is as good as the others and am ready to try the next one.

So very enjoyable. A well written Western/Mountain Man tale, continuing right where the last book left off - we join Nate, Shakespeare and Winona on their way to Rendezvous. Very much looking forward to the next book in the series.
