This comprehensive text applies research to practice, providing both ESL and mainstream teachers with the background and expertise necessary to plan and implement reading programs that match the particular needs and abilities of their students from kindergarten through adult levels.
Nice to see an updated addition that goes beyond just including a new preface followed by the same old text. Here Gunderson takes on a couple of former grad students to change the structure of his nearly 25-year old textbook to include more chapters involving digital literacy. It is hard to gauge how many parts were overhauled for the new millennium, but it is a telling sign that just like literacy studies keep adding plurals, new and multi- to the field, language instruction slims down the updates with additional letters like E, L and T. The authors do their best to wrangle together as much of the diverging theories and still present them as useful material for all teachers, knowing full well that a great number of them will continue to ignore the good advice and consequently the students who need the most mindful attention in the classroom. Looking forward to a brave new fourth edition that will include more holograms and tricorder-like translators.
