연애의 감정학

백영옥은 단편소설 「고양이 샨티」로 문학동네 신인상을 수상하며 등단하여 작품활동을 시작했다. 2008년 첫 장편소설 『스타일』로 제4회 세계문학상을 수상했으며, 이후 다양한 소설과 산문들을 통해 현 시대의 ‘연애들’을 대변하며 독자들에게 자리매김한 작가다. 백영옥은 「연애의 감정학」을 통해 페이스북, 인스타그램, 트위터 등의 SNS로 연결되어 헤어져도 헤어질 수 없는 초연결 사회의 연인들에 대해 고찰한다.

태희는 애인인 종수와 헤어진 후 이별을 극복하기 위해 수영을 시작하고, 일본어 공부를 하고 사내 스터디모임에 가입하는 등 다양한 활동을 한다. 하지만 태희의 바쁜 일상 가운데 어김없이 치고 들어오는 종수의 소식들과 더불어, 종수의 SNS를 통해 그의 근황을 확인하고 싶어 하는 태희의 욕망이 충돌하고 그 사이에서 태희는 고민과 갈등을 반복한다.

안서현 문학평론가는 「연애의 감정학」의 해설에서, 백영옥 작가가 그려내는 이 이야기는 이 시대의 사랑과 풍속은 물론, ‘삶’을 일깨우는 ‘사랑’이라는 단어의 영원한 본질도 짚고 있다고 평한다. ‘전 남자친구 증후군’이라는 해석의 병에 걸린 태희가 그를 털고 일어나 진심으로 자신의 마음이 무엇인지 차분히 읽어 내려갈 수 있을 때 마주하는 사랑의 해석, 그것이 ‘감정학’으로 표출되고 있다고 평한다.

Review is for the title on the cover - how to break up like a winner.

I found this book randomly at a Korean language bookstore in Korea town in nyc. Reading it was an interesting experience.

The edition is nice - a bilingual reader would get a lot more out of it than me.

The subject matter of the story is the strange nature of breakups in the age of social media. It’s so philosophical and thoughtful - full of stats about social media and technology - that I almost felt I was reading an essay or opinion piece.

However, when I think about it, there’s a fully fleshed out plot going on at the same time, happening at a pretty fast pace.

Interesting read. I would be curious if it’s possible to get a collection of stories by this author or more stories in the series that published this.
