This might be one of the worst books I have ever read. For starters there are several literal rape scenes which are just an automatic no in my opinion. The writing was terrible, the protagonist is so incredibly unlikeable, and the women in this book genuinely set the feminist movement back 1,000 years. Awful book do not waste your time.

Avevo iniziato questo libro solo perchè mi serviva una lettura in francese, ma anche con tutte le buone intenzioni è stata dura arrivare alla fine tollerando le innumerevoli frasi misogine e sessiste. Unico, e sottolineo unico, aspetto interessante è tutto il conflitto tra cattolici e protestanti nell'Irlanda del Nord, non avevo ancora letto libri su questo tema. Per il resto mi sono bruciati gli occhi. Non è possibile che dopo quattro violenze contro una ragazza, l'autore abbia il coraggio di far dire al protagonista che dagli occhi di lei aveva capito che non era mai stata una violenza senza consenso*. Fuori dal mondo. Non mi interessa se è stato scritto 50 anni fa e "la mentalità era diversa". Il tema delle violenze sessuali è lecito se trattato in un modo appropriato nei libri, questo non lo era di sicuro. Fatevi un favore, non leggetelo. Se vi interessa il conflitto in Irlanda del Nord, ci sono sicuramente libri migliori.

I got this book to revise some French, but even with the best intentions, it was a nightmare to get to the end with all the mysoginist and sexist comments. The only (mind you, only) interesting aspect was the conflict between catholics and protestants in Northern Ireland, I hadn't read any other books with this topic before. For what concerns the rest of the book (plot, characters, etc), my eyes burned. It's unbelievable that, after at least four times the protagonist raped this girl, the author has the audacity to say that 'he saw it in her eyes that it was never really non-consensual' (not a literal quote but the original wasn't much different)*. Out of this world. I don't care how many years ago this book was written (more than 50) or that the mentality was different. I really don't care. Some things like rape and violence are legit if the topics are dealt with appropriately. This definitely wasn't the case. Do yourself a favour and steer clear of this book. If you're interested in the conflicts in Northern Ireland, there are surely 100 better books you can read.
