Dorris Alexander “Dee” Brown (1908–2002) was a celebrated author of both fiction and nonfiction, whose classic study Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee is widely credited with exposing the systematic destruction of American Indian tribes to a world audience.
Brown was born in Louisiana and grew up in Arkansas. He worked as a reporter and a printer before enrolling at Arkansas State Teachers College, where he met his future wife, Sally Stroud. He later earned two degrees in library science, and worked as a librarian while beginning his career as a writer. He went on to research and write more than thirty books, often centered on frontier history or overlooked moments of the Civil War. Brown continued writing until his death in 2002.
The tale from the other side...turns out my ancestors opened up the west for the Europeans. Beyond that though a well thought out and well written script with pictures that help us give faces to the names of the fallen and those who survived those brutal times of sorrow.
This book talks about the Fighting Indians of the West. I wonder why in high school so much Western history and the story of the Indians were left out.
This is a we quick, easy, and tragic overview of the decline of Native American culture in the West. It took me a few chapters to realize he was telling a linear account and not just random vignettes. It told me enough to sense the scope of what was happening and arouse my curiosity, but I never felt like I was getting the full story. If you go into this book expecting a breezy survey, you'll probably appreciate it more. Otherwise it is a worthwhile introduction to the narrative of the old West.
I rate this book 3 of 5 — GOOD. The historic photos were excellent, but the accompanying narrative was underdeveloped, and the book truly suffered by not containing any maps.
