Former Royal Marine Monty Halls and his faithful canine companion, Reuben, won the hearts of viewers and readers with his adventures on the west coast of Scotland in Monty Halls' Great Escape . In this adventure, Monty and Reuben escape to Connemara on the wild west coast of Ireland to help the Irish Whale and Dolphin group and get to know the people of this remote and beautiful place. Amid mussel cook-offs and ill-judged corruch races, hair-raising boat-trips with legendary shark fishermen and tales of pirate warrior princesses, Monty races the length of the coastline monitoring the marine animals that are his first love. With a plan to set up a network of local people to continue the good work after he's gone, Monty is on an incredible quest, joined by the kind of amazing people that turn a job into an adventure.
Published to accompany the major BBC series, Monty Halls' Great Irish Escape is an unforgettable account of a unique expedition, filled with Monty's trademark charm, humour and boundless energy.
I thoroughly enjoyed this as I have followed his TV series with great interest. On the screen he is engaging, knowledgeable, caring and involved in the environment and has an hilarious relationship with Reuben, his mad but beautiful dog. Once again he is staying for 6 months in a new place, this time the Irish West Coast, to work on tracking dolphins, basking sharks and other marine mammals. He becomes involved with the people again, an interesting group of characters that we get to know through his clear and humourous descriptions. He writes well with good descriptions of the world around him ,possibly sharpened by his scientific knowledge and eye. Again he raises money for the local Wildlife group and takes us on a journey of discovery of this wild and beautiful place. Like another reviewer noted, I too would have liked more about the marine world on his doorstep.
I have watched all Monty Halls Tv shows and really enjoyed them so when I chose this book at the library I wondered whether his written word would be as entertaining. I am not disappointed. Monty writes brilliantly and at times I was laughing so much especially his descriptions about Rueben's antics. I was totally engrossed, educated and I am delighted that I have read this book. Well done Monty you are like a sea breeze totally invigorating!
