Many critical voices, in several languages, have praised the poet Vasyl Makhno. But in the case of this book such praise is only half of the golden apple. Without an excellent or, more precisely, a fully adequate translator, the poet’s name would be meaningless to most people, and a book of bad translations would distort his name. Makhno is very lucky to have found an adequate English-language translator. Orest Popovych, although (or, perhaps, because) he is a scientist by profession, is able to capture not only the text but also the subtext of this poetry. Never attempting, as some poet-translators do, to outsing the original song, Popovych attentively listens not only to he words but also to the melody and spirit of these poems long before putting pen to paper. As a result, those who do not have the Ukrainian language, may rest assured that they get the kernel of these powerful texts, and those who do will delight in the translator’s art. Василь Махно (1964, Чортків, Україна) – український письменник та перекладач. З 2000 року живе та працює в США. Лауреат премії Книга року BBC у 2015 році за роман Дім у Бейтінґ Голлов (Львів: ВСЛ, 2015).

У період з 1993 по 2019 рік видав 13 поетичних збірок, серед яких найвідомішими є 38 віршів про Нью-Йорк і дещо інше (Київ, Критика, 2004), та Паперовий міст (Львів: ВСЛ, 2017)

У період з 2015 по 2019 рік видав три художні книги: Дім у Бейтінґ Голлов (Львів: ВСЛ, 2015), Околиці та пограниччя (Київ: Yakaboo Publishing, 2019) та Вічний календар (Львів: ВСЛ, 2019).

У період з 2006 по 2011 рік видав дві збірки есеїстики книги: Парк культури та відпочинку імені Ґертруди Стайн (Київ, Критика 2006) та Котилася торба (Київ: Критика 2011).

У 2007 році як драматург видав одразу дві п’єси Coney Island: драма-оперета (Київська Русь. Одеса. Хвилі, 2007) та Bitch/Beach Generation (Кур'єр кривбасу, 2007).

Як перекладач видав україномовні переклади польських поетів Збіґнєва Герберта Струна світла (Тернопіль, Лілея 1996), та Януша Шубера Спійманий у сіть (Київ, Критика, 2007).

Вірші та прозу Махна перекладено десятками мовами, зокрема польською, англійською, сербською, німецькою, вірменською, російською, румунською, словенською, малаямською, литовською, чеською, портуґальською, іспанською, ідишом, та івритом. Так окремими виданнями виходили переклади його творів польською: Wędrowcy (Poznań, 2003), 34 wierszy o Nowym Jorku i nie tylko (Wrocław, 2005); румунською: Fiecare obiect îşi are locul său (Craiova, 2009); англійською: Thread: And Selected New York Poems (New York, 2009) тощо.

I found the author sexist and a touch racist and it distracted from my enjoyment of these poems. While I appreciated the effort to capture the lives of immigrants to New York and to evoke powerful scenes, I couldn't escape the uncomfortable feeling that the author is really just a bigot.

For example, in a poem titled "Chinatown: Fish Store," the poem powerfully describes the smells and feel of the ubiquitous Chinatown fish store, noting that "the smell in the store is such/that pregnant women hurriedly leave it/having bought nothing." But then the next (final) stanza of the poem says "and Chinese women are pregnant/practically all the time."

Maybe (probably) this is somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but the humor didn't translate for me. Maybe it works better in the original Ukranian.
