If this were written by a high schooler or a first time playwright, it wouldn’t be so offensively bad. The fact that this is such an obvious cash grab with a book and music that has seemingly little effort put into it makes it brutally painful to tolerate. I find it shocking that anyone but a super fan of the film would care about this. Even the nostalgia is lackluster.

I am currently directing this for the Walla Walla Amphitheater Summer Musical, and I'm quickly falling in love with the counterpoint of this not-so-famous musical, but very famous film. The musical is like the film, but the songs are not subtext, they are sung, and then they are in counterpoint with some lovely/very-Sondheim-y musical theater songs that are sung by the cast members who are not the teens wanting rebellion...and then they are magically tied together. My favorite scenes are the opening of Act One and the closing of Act One where the counterpoint is most keenly successful. Anyway, worth a second look for anyone who's a bit on the fence about 80s crap-tastic-ness.
