OUR STORY A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.
Actually very good for my purposes--I used it while in Turkey for a week and while in Athens for the day. Lots of information for a long trip through a lot of countries in the area. Obviously not the best for an extended stay in any of them, but good for short trips. And of course, it's Lonely Planet, so there are many specifics and helpful tips.
You get the info and the maps. But it seems sort of...extremely succinct. If you are travelling all over, this book will give you great brief bits on your area. If you are going to a specific location, get a book sourced specifically on that location for more expansive coverage.
