My recollection is a bit uncertain on this one. I believe we covered utilitarianism in Dr. Schweickart's Social & Political Philosophy course back in 1980/81 and that I picked up this book at around that time. However, it wasn't specifically assigned and I read it two years later as my interests in ethics as applied to political action had grown.
