In the future, the line between human and machine becomes blurred. Androids can be programmed to be perfect lovers…but whether their hearts of steel allow love to become real is the question. If anyone knows, it would be Milo O’Shea, owner of O’Shea’s Discount Bot Shoppe, who supplies full-service androids for cut-rate prices.Maeko and Koie, members of different Muns, purchase two bots to assist them in their assignment to begin terraforming a distant planet. As the two couples travel to the planet Aysha to begin the work, feelings they never knew existed began to surface. And the only ones who can teach Maeko and Koie about love and passion are the bots Sean and Meghan, both uniquely programmed by O’Shea’s Discount Bot Shoppe.
Jennifer Dunne wrote her first “book” at the age of four, telling the story of a lost little girl and the helpful elephant who leads her home. She was all set for a career in the literary arts, to begin in that far off misty future after kindergarten — then she discovered a book about “the new math” on the coffee table, and fell in love with numbers instead. After getting a degree in math followed by a masters degree in artificial intelligence, she joined IBM and devoted herself to doing neat things with computers, all the time continuing to write stories as a way of balancing so much logical brain activity.
She is the author of over a dozen novels and novellas spanning the genres of fantasy, science fiction, and romance. (She’s either a unique individual who is difficult to categorize, or easily bored – you decide.) Beyond that, there’s no point describing her hobbies or activities, since they’ll have changed by the time you read this. (Score one for “easily bored”.) She recently relocated to Colorado, to play the lead role in her very own love story, thankfully with fewer explosions, occult happenings, and dire situations than in her fiction. Although, there was that one time...
Koie fits perfectly into his mun (a family group way of living of sorts). He offers a lot to his group. And he is chosen for a special mission for his mun. It’s an honor…but somehow, Koie feels that it isn’t. He’s being separated from everyone else and sent out into space.
Maeko does not fit into her mun. She’s not real good at sharing, which is not the mun way. She, too, is chosen for a mission. For her? To be sent out into space feels like the greatest reward in the universe.
And the two of these people are teamed up for this mission. But what you need to understand is that muns are larger than just two people. It seemed to me more like a tribe or clan with lots of people all working together toward a common goal. So, for Koie, a two-person mun seems incomprehensible, well, almost anyway. But he gives it a go. And for Maeko, a two-person mun seems incomprehensible as well…she just wants to be alone.
But all that changes on the journey to the planet, Aysha. So, what happens? Can’t tell you…lol. But let’s just say that the two androids they pick up along the way (Sean and Meghan) stir things up in deliciously wicked ways.
This is not a light, fluffy piece of futuristic storytelling. Illicit Programming is erotic science fiction. Ms. Dunne pens her tale with deep, vivid details—both sci-fi and erotic—which is what makes this such a beautiful story. The reader is drawn into Koie and Maeko’s way of life, their beliefs, their worries, and their love. You know what’s at stake if they fail…and if they succeed. You ache for Maeko and the pain she has suffered, the lies she’s had to tell. And you feel for Koie as he misses the only family he’s ever known. Ms. Dunne does a wonderful job of bringing these two characters together. It feels real.
BEST BITS: As for Meghan and Sean? Oooo…such naughty, naughty bots.
Last, we installed the solo miner/explorer companion package.
“You are my munmate now.”
“Then would you prefer to be relaxed? Or exhausted?”
“Don’t go, Maeko. Don’t leave me.”
VERDICT: Illicit Programming is a wonderful sci-fi romance. If you enjoy hot, hot, sex and detailed foreign worlds and lifestyles, then grab a glass of wine and your favorite vibrator and pick this one up!
