Dutifulness to Parents: In the Light of the Holy Qur’an and the Authentic Sunnah

Rate this book
After dutifulness to Allah, dutifulness to our parents comes next for Muslims, but what does our duty to our parents entail? In this little book, Nidhâm Sakkijha gives examples and evidence from the Qur’an and the Hadith of Allah’s Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) to explain, point by point, what these duties are, and how the fulfillment of these duties may lead us to Paradise, while their neglect may mean that we end up in Hell.

I believe this book to be incredible. It suffices itself as a guide for all Muslims justifying why we must be dutiful to our parents. There are several Hadith for each chapter of the book, clearly justifying our due diligence to our parents.

I strongly recommend this book to every Muslim reading this. Being disobedient to our parents is a grave sin that we must avoid! Even if they commit shirk, we should do our best to respect them and crave their guidance.

May Allah ﷻ protect our parents from the hell fire and allow them to all reunite in Jannah Al Firdaus.

Be dutiful and kind to your parents as they are the key to paradise and your ticket to getting accepted innovations. Know that Allah's pleasure and anger lies in the pleasure / anger of the parents.
A must read for all parents / grown up children. Tells what's forbidden / permitted and why / how should be dutiful towards your parents during their life time and post life.

About to pull my hair out as a result of increasing disrespect and just downright rude behaviour from my son, I decided I needed to do something quick! There were times when I’d just look at him and wonder to myself, ‘Where is this coming from? I’ve taught him better. He knows not to act this way.’ My son is just shy of 13. Need I say more? I decided he needed examples from Qur’an and hadiths, but I wanted something concise and all in one area, not a link here, and an ayat there. I found the perfect book: Dutifulness to Parents by Nidham Sakkijha.

Because the book only consists of 73 pages, it’s short enough not to be daunting for teenagers, and also perfect for adults with not much time to dedicate to reading. At the beginning, Sakkijha opens with five ayats from the Qur’an. These ayats are then used later throughout the book with more explanation and details as examples of Allah’s commands to obey our parents.

Nidham Sakkijha gives examples of characteristics of the prophets’ u dutifulness to their parents. He then goes on to give several quotes from Qur’an and hadiths regarding Allah’s pleasure with those who are dutiful to their parents, and their rewards. The two major things I learned most from these examples were: “Allah’s pleasure comes through the parents’ pleasure, and His Anger comes through the parents’ anger”, and dutifulness to parents precedes jihad. You may be asking yourself ‘Really? Allah I places significance of being dutiful to parents above jihad?’ As a revert, who was not raised with this notion, it was a bit of a surprise and took me a few days considering it before it began sinking in.

Of course, Allah I also takes great displeasure in those who disobey Him and are not dutiful to their parents. This is considered a grave sin.

‘…If one or both of them reach old age while with you, say not to them ‘uff’ (disapproval or irritation), nor shout at them, but address them in terms of honour…’ (Al-’Isra’:23).

This especially struck a chord with me. As a product of Western culture, how many times have I been guilty of verbalising impatience with my parents? Far too many times than I would care to admit.

Dutifulness to Parents is the perfect book for those wishing to educate their children as well as remind themselves of the importance of caring for and obeying their parents. It doesn’t give advice or opinions; it sticks to the proofs from Qur’an and hadiths. The layout of the book is simple, making it easy to follow. Because the tone of the book is straightforward, it makes it easy for readers of all ages to understand and benefit, insha Allah. My son is currently reading it, and I have seen an improvement in his attitude already. I highly recommend picking up a copy to add to your library. A definite must-read for all parents with children as well as for children with parents.
