This book came out in 1981 and so gives a very interesting viewpoint on the "recent" (at that time) invasion of the Soviet Union to supposedly bolster the rule of the new Afghan Communist government. Griffiths hits the nail on the head as he discusses the situation with the Afghan mujaheddin & the possible impact & future implications of a country like the US supporting them more (in the proxy Cold War-turned-hot). Some interesting parallels to where the US finds itself today after 20 years of supporting democracy in Afghanistan. The players have changed, but the Great Game continues on, with some of the same players and same complexities.
