本书原名《王守仁》，初版于1930年。王阳明之学是明代理学的重镇。钱穆先生把王阳明置于整个理学发展史中加以考察，以洗炼的笔法勾勒王学之大纲与流变，指出阳明思想的价值在于其以全新的方式解决了宋儒“万物一体”和“变化气质”的遗留问题，贡献了独特的“良知”理论。钱先生讲王学，提醒读者“脱弃训诂和条理的眼光，直透大义，反向自心”，以求得王学之“真着精神处”，这是钱先生于王学的独特之处。
