Dino Wars, Band 01: Das Coda-Programm

Rate this book

Born at an early age, Dan Metcalf knew exactly what he was going to be when he grew up – tall. This was achieved before he even got to secondary school and so another career was decided on. The life of a chocolate teapot salesman is however fairly temperamental and so he decided to move to a job which was comparatively reliable – a writer.

He has written for radio, screen and magazines but is best known as the author of ‘The Lottie Lipton Adventures’ (although he is best known around where he lives as ‘That Weirdy Beardy Guy’). He is a full time writer and his biggest ambition is write a major children’s adventure series and create a superhero comic.

This would be a great book for any dinosaur-mad 7+ year olds who like a bit of adventure with some minor peril and a sense of humour.
Adam is an interesting protagonist - he is brave and excited to go on an adventure but he also has a habit of jumping into situations without fully thinking through the consequences. These traits kickstart the crisis which he then has to resolve as he inadvertently triggers the imminent release of a biological weapon that will wipe out all dinosaur life on their planet, even the peace-loving herbivores who live alongside the humans in their settlements.
Off he goes to try to stop this happening, accompanied by his sister, two young friends who have been orphaned and his best friend who just happens to be an Iguanadon! Dag is probably one of my favourite characters so far so I really hope that we get to see more of him in the next books (this is the first in a four book series).
To stop the release of the biological weapons, our ragtag heroes must collect four energy crystals from around their world, no small task in a post-apocalyptic landscape where people live in barricaded settlements. The first crystal is in their own village, Bastion, therefore no problem. The second crystal, however, hands around the neck of a power-crazed carnivorous dinosaur. Can they get the crystal and get out alive?
I was lucky enough to get an early copy of this to review and it will now be making its way into my book corner where it is sure to be devoured by my pupils. We will be looking forward to the next book!

Dino Wars: Rise of the Raptors is a fun-filled adventure story that see our heroes enter a city of carnivorous Raptors in their quest to retrieve the Dilotron crystals.

Dino Wars: Rise of the Raptors is fun, featuring a cast of characters that children can enjoy and relate to. It has plenty of twists and turns, plenty of adventure and best of all, eccentric dinosaurs including the tech loving inventor and a Raptor with a bad attitude.

This is a fun story that I loved reading, and so will children (age 7 years +) will thoroughly enjoy. I can wait for the next instalment to continue the adventure. Dan Metcalf has written the book in a fun style, some of the dinosaur names will be a bit of a challenge for younger readers but it easily to read.

Also, I must mention the illustrator Aaron Blecha. He has created some great comic book style black & white illustrations to accompany the story and are interspersed throughout the book. They are fun and expressive and add depth to the story.
