About the author

Emily Daoud Nasrallah (Arabic: إملي نصرالله) was a Lebanese writer and women's rights activist.

She graduated from the Beirut College for Women (now the Lebanese American University) with an associate degree in arts in 1956. Two years later, she obtained a BA in education and literature from the American University of Beirut. She published her first novel "Birds of September" in 1962; the book was instantly acclaimed, and won three Arabic literary prizes. "Flight Against Time" was Nasrallah's first novel to be translated into English, published by the Canada-based Ragweed Press. Nasrallah became a prolific writer, publishing many novels, children's stories, and short story collections, touching on themes such as family, village life, war, emigration, and women's rights. The latter was a subject she has maintained support for throughout her life.

A beautiful book, it perfectly bursts the integument of the Lebanese society reaching its core shielded by norms, traditions, superstitions, and the omnipresent effect of emigration.

Although the plot takes place around the first half of the twentieth century you can relate to a lot of issues that still reside in the Lebanese society. Agrarian culture gave away to a business oriented economy, material wealth transformed life abolishing many of the previous benchmarks of life such as working in the fields, the split distinction between city and village, the chastity of girls (sadly)... however, the virginity of the girl still counts as the primary condition for marriage, and its absence the natural cause of scandalous divorce. Another yet strong present today is that of emigration and the holy image projected on emigrants synonymous with wealth, high education, and prosperity (although this is increasingly being rebuked) .

The only down side was the ending, it could have been much more elaborate and it came as a real disappointment compared to what the book had to offer.

إطالة غير مملّة على الإطلاق. الخط الدرامي للأحداث متسارع. والحس العاطفي منسجم تناغماً مع الحس الاجتماعي القروي ل" جورة السنديان" .. أوجعتني مأساة ليّا. لكن الخاتمة جاءت مباغتة وغير خاتمة..

رواية تصف رتابة الحياة القروية اللبنانية بطريقة واقعية و لكن كانت هذه الرتابة في الأحداث مملة من دون وجود حبكة للقصة و المقدمة و الخاتمة لم أجد فارق بينهما.

رغم إعجابي بكتابات الأديبة وكتبها، إلا أن هذه الرواية لم تكن على قدر الآمال. أحداث منظمة ومنسقة، ولكن إطالة مملة وغير مجدية؛ جعلتني أتوقف عن إستكمال قراءة الرواية..

رواية تحكي عن أحداث عايشت لبنان و ثقافات اغترست بين مختلف المدن، الرواية ممتعة و لكن بها الكثير من الإطالة، لم أميل مطلقاً للخاتمة لأنها لم تختم شيء على الأطلاق!

يعرفون فضول المرأة: تعيش على موائد "القيل و القلب" و لا يهدأ لها بال ما دام هناك سرّ لم يكشف لها.



تفضل القسوة مع الحقيقة، على كلام مبطن، يبقيها في مناطق الشك، و أقاليم الظلام...



عملته حياة الكفاح و الشفاء ألا يسترسل في أحلامه.



مجاملات لا تنتهي. عبارات جاهزة. راقدة في قاع الوعي، تستخرج من قوالبها، و تسكب على مائدة الحضور...
إنه يشعر اليوم بالراحة، و هو يترك خلفه زوجه قادرة على النهوض بالأعباء و إدارة دفة السفينة في غياب ربانها.

أجمع الكثيرون على أنّ "في الجمر الغافي" إطالة غير مألوفة. لم يسبق لي أن رصدت إطالة كهذه في روايات نصرالله الخمس التي قرأت. انّما "في الاطالة شبه افادة". طرحت إملي نصرالله مواضيع حسّاسّة جدًّا، من هنا وجب إعطاء كلّ أقصوصة حقها في دراسة مطوّلة إن من جهة الشّخصيّات المعنية في الأحداث، كذلك من قبل القارئ. وقد كان أكثر من طبيعي مصادفة عالم الهجرة والإغتراب الّذي كلّل معظم روايات نصرالله. لقد أصبح ل"جورة السّنديان" ركنٌ خاص داخلي، يبكي مهاجريه، ينتظر مواسم القطاف في الكروم، يحنُّ لمن و ما مرّ ومضى.
