SERVICE DOG HEROES, by Linda Bozzo, is one of many examples of titles featuring remarkable dogs doing even more remarkable things to serve their human partners. At 48 pages, including photo illustrations, text features, and engaging non-fiction text, this is a non-traditional picture book that has something to offer every age. These are not military service dogs, yet the training, temperament, and chemistry required of them is comparable. Their life-saving roles may not be on the battlefield, but are no less heroic and admirable.

The history of service dogs for people with physical challenges, as well as insight into the choosing, training, and retiring of them. Ironically, I'd just been thinking about the fate of service dogs who need to retire and this book practically hopped into my hand. Also a great, outside-the-box look at partnership and team behavior. I'm guessing children from 5 years old and up would enjoy hearing the contents of this book, if they're not ready (yet) to read it themselves.

A good series about working dogs. This series differs from the Dog Heroes series in how the information is presented. This series has longer text on each page, though the chapters are still manageable. The use of real photos will appeal to children as well as the detail of information provided. Glossary, index and table of contents included.

This is a book that would interest many children because most are familiar with dogs as pets and most children are interested by dogs. Once interested, this book makes a great introduction to the layout of informational texts. It includes a table of contents, glossary and index, as well as many pictures and captions and an additional reading list.
