Goodwillie as a roomer, her friend Judge Milo Rainey told her what she already knew -- she was in her rights. Of course, when it came to her other roomer, attractive Betty Woodruff, the Rugged Cross preacher had different ideas -- a strong and compelling urge to meet Betty at the Pleasant Hours Motel. It was mighty embarrassing for everybody, especially Preacher Clough, when SHeriff Cling Huffman got called to the motel by a member of the congregation.
But of all Jenny's acts of courage, the bravest was the time she rented a room to dark-skinned Lawanna Neleight, when no one else in the whole of Sallinaw would -- because Dale WOmack who ran the town said they couldn't. Lawanna said she was part-Indian, but Dade said she was a Negro and what Dade said went. Judge Milo Rainey warned Jenny she was headed for big trouble and there wasn't any way of stopping it, but Jenny went ahead and did what she thought was right.

Părți pozitive:
1. Portretizează perfect societatea din anii '50 ale suburbiilor americane sudiste
2. Stilul autorului este extrem de light si usor de citit si tocmai de asta aveam nevoie acum, pe timp de reading slump
3. Personajele sunt foarte diverse si colorat conturate. Cele mai interesante erau discursurile lor cu un aer motivational și cuvinte pompoase, care ma făceau sa ma gandesc la filmele si desenele animate clasice.
4. Personajele sunt simbolice. Jenny este un personaj interesant, plin de viață, o femeie de la țară zdravănă, cu moravuri usoare in tinerete.
5. Predicatorul Clough si avocatul au fost personajele mele preferate pentru ca pareau ceva mai mult decât la prima vedere.
Părți negative:
1. Din pacate, cartea este mult prea feministă pentru gustul meu. Bărbatul alb si bogat, care ataca femeia mulatra, fără apărare. Pfff!
2. Unele personaje sunt pur si simplu de umplutura sau au un rol mult prea puternic de victime speriate.
3. Orice problema grava se rezolva aparent prin fugă.
4. E prea mult pus aspectul pe aspectul fizic.
5. Între ce spunea Jenny (cum ca e femeie respectabilă) si ce făcea (se lua la înjurături și amenințări cu toti, s-a batut cu vecina, profita fizic de un bărbat cu handicap) este o prea mare prăpastie. Posibil sa fi fost asta intenția autorului, dar recunosc ca m-a amuzat usor toata treaba .
6. Unele personaje nu au fost suficient conturate

As you can probably deduce from the title of this novel, Jenny is the central character. Is she a heroine in the heroic sense of the word? Probably not. But Jenny is playing out her part on a small Southern stage—and her actions, in contrast to those of most of the other local actors—seem to make her the most admirable of the bunch.
A lot of this story, apart from Caldwell’s usual elements of ignorance, poverty and prejudice, has to do with war and peace between the sexes. Hence, when we read the following on p. 208, we shouldn’t be surprised: “’(t)here’s not a female alive who can be trusted when they’ve got man-fever—they’ll take a man away from you as quick as a dog can lick a dish.” (Believe it or not, this snippet of dialogue comes from our heroine, Jenny.)
I’ve given this novel only four stars. Why? It contains all of the usual Caldwellian elements, plus (as I suggested immediately above) a couple of new ones. But the real fire of Erskine Caldwell, I feel, is just not in it. The story is a tad too neat from start to finish.
Do I feel it’s worth reading? Certainly—as much as any of Caldwell’s works. Just don’t expect to be moved by it to the same degree you can expect to be moved by God’s Little Acre, Tobacco Road or Gretta.

CA ȘI CUM în grăbita schimbare a anotimpului amurgul ar fi fost dat uitării, în acea zi de octombrie noaptea se lăsa cu o bruscă revărsare de întuneric. Era vremea când blândețea verii, chiar dacă zăbovește mai mult, este întotdeauna copleșită de neîndurătoarea putere a iernii. Pe la mijlocul dimineții, un vânt ca de gheață coborâse dinspre munții de la nord, se abătuse asupra coli- nelor acoperite de rogozul galben și, suflând cu furie pe sub norii negri și joși, adusese primul ger al iernii din anul acela peste orașul Sallisaw, peste ogoarele din jur și peste pășunile de la poalele munților. După-amiază vântul se potolise, lăsând în urma lui aerul neclintit și înghețat sub cerul întunecos. Iar acum, pe când lumina sură a zilei făcea repede loc întunericului, zvelta casă cu etaj, clădită din lemn, trosnea încetișor, în vreme ce noaptea rece se așeza asupra bârnelor. La venirea dimineții, bobocii roșii și galbeni ai crizantemelor vor arăta păliți și răpuși, iar frunzele verzi, arse de ger, vor începe să se desprindă de pe corzile viței crescute viguros în timpul verii peste chioșcul aflat în curtea din spate. Așezată în fotoliu, Jenny Royster se aplecă înainte, privi pe fereastră și cercetă încă o dată cu atenție strada pustie, iar pe urmă făcu puțin mai mare flacăra radiatorului cu gaz. După ce o potrivi, se lăsă iar pe spate, în căldura aceea plăcută, și își împreună mâinile peste pântece. Apoi își săltă brațele, pentru a slăbi apăsarea sânilor voluminoși. This book is a quintessential example of early and superficial social justice writing -- an acknowledgement and challenge of injustice that fails to account for deeper social and personal biases and dynamics at play. Caldwell is clearly challenging old, rigid social systems and stigmas, but as a white, male US Southerner in the early '60s, he fails to find the humanity behind the activism and take this to a deeper and more human level.
Jenny By Nature is about an open-minded ex-madam who takes on the close-minded church-goers and residents of her community who are repeatedly urging her to evict her tenants for being a little person, a sexually active single woman, and a mixed-race newcomer. With the help of a powerful local judge, Jenny tries to live her life without outside involvement.
Jenny may be front-and-center throughout the story, but she (and her tenants) are nothing more than pawns for the battle between regressive and progressive white men. This is not the story of a woman with a stubborn "nature" standing up for what's right, but a story about how the actions of a deeply lonely and insecure woman (who is terrified of being alone) start a fissure between the men of the town.
The only "nature" truly explored is that of white men trying to define their masculinity in rapidly changing times.

Soon after beginning this book you realise this is a bulk standard quintessential Caldwell Book. You have the priest who sleeps around, prostitution and race issues. The only ‘Caldwell Factor’ missing from this book was alcoholism.
On one side it was interesting to see the character Dade, businessman who has brought out the town to do his will. Racist by heart and the town cowards to stand up to his views. That is except for Jenny, the main character of the story.
What I did find interesting about this book was the Character Lawana. How Caldwell described and depicted how the town rejected her based in Dade was very moving and shocking. Even more so because of her heritage.
The book was rounded up a bit too quickly. Sometimes his works would be more interesting/ better is 1) He went off topic a bit more and 2) His books were longer. A hundred something pages isn’t enough.

Începutul nu are legătură cu mijlocul, mijlocul nu are legătură cu începutul și începutul nu prea are legătură cu sfârșitul. Am continuat-o pentru că avea potențial pe la mijloc, deși eram pregătită să renunț după primele capitole. Din păcate, nu văd cum ar fi putut fi o problemă de la traducere...
