Willow Mason is the author of Witchy Paranormal Cozy Mysteries.
She lives in a small town in New Zealand, far too close to the beach and fantastic walking trails to get nearly as much work done as she should. Until someone bestows magic powers on her, she'll just keep hoping for the invention of self-cleaning dishes and self-washing clothes.
Third of the way through and I quit. Here's why. . .
The characters are terrible. That"s it. The dead cop is useless, the other one selfish. The main character is spineless, the other characters are trivial. They are all horrible people that are meant to be angst ridden, but they are all so shallow that all you get is a scummy top. I did not enjoy a single bit of what I read because I did not care about anyone, not in the slightest. And it is a shame because the set up was very intriguing. This concept with characters with some depth, easy four stars. As is, not even close.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring by more than 0.50 of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
Interesting idea. I liked that it was set in New Zealand, made a change. I also liked that the MC was a 'fairy godmother'. It's not the first time I've read a book with one as the lead, but still nice to have more books that branch off from the typical supernaturals.
Some of the things that were irritating me about the book, turned out to be plot points that resolved, so I don't need to mention them. I thought it was bad world building etc.
First time read the author's work?: No -- Second try with this author, I preferred this book.
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
I really enjoyed this book. It moved really well to start with. About halfway through it sort of slowed. Not so much slowing as changing directions not a smoothly as I would’ve liked. They should’ve been more subtle. I kept thinking I had skipped something. The MCs exboyfriend had been a real jerk then in one part at the end, all of a sudden he was being nice and they were counting him in on what was going on like they trusted him completely. I wouldn’t want him around, even if he was a cop, because I would think he just wanted the credit. It was sad that most of the characters were shady but it was still a great storyline and I really think this could be a number one series. The author reminds me of Kristen Painter, which is a great thing. I loved the story of the ghost of the cop at the beginning. Then how he disappeared after a short time of being dead. That’s an interesting spin. I wish she would’ve added something at the end about Seddon and him helping because that wasn’t really brought to a close well. He had too big a role in the story just to be random at the end. The whole thing with Monroe at the end really confused me. Can’t say more for fear of spoiling it. I like this series and hope it is continued.
A good read. I think lovers of the genre will be delighted
Let’s see …
A fun read with a good plot line. I’m not gonna say it was some fantastic piece of literature. I mean come on you know why you’re reading reviews at all … escape and the supernatural.
I read the excerpt and honestly it fit well. I’ve certainly never read a mix of fairy godmother with a dash of vampire. I found the mix sort of interesting. I’m not entirely sure it works so well but this book didn’t really seem to flesh out what that means for her as far as powers and such. I mean she didn’t seem very vimpirey to me after all she woulda been fast enough to stop some things that went on.
Overall, the book is entertaining and with a fresh vampire/fairy godmother mix I’ve not seen done before.
This is an entertaining new supernatural cozy mystery series. A unique and entertaining cast of characters with a fun and entertaining storyline. A young woman who has a twin sister and they are both fairy godmother‘s. Only differences her twin sister has a beautiful set of wings and is a actual fairy godmother. Our main character sadly has no wings so she is relegated to basically the file room at fairy godmother headquarters. Read on and find out what she does to change your life and what happens in her life that changes everything for her. It is a very entertaining and unique new series. A fun and entertaining read from beginning to end. Check it out
Korea has always wanted to be a godmother, but without wings, she's been relegated to working other departments, most recently, stationery. Frustrated with her inability to achieve her dream without wings, she becomes an investigator, helping people that way. Her current client is a dead police officer who was killed while investigating the murder of a young woman who seems to have had her fairy bonding mark curt from her flesh.
This was a an interesting, type of urban fantasy, with mystery, crime against the main character, and great interaction among the various supernatural groups. It's a great read.
With a vampiric, private investigator who is also a somewhat naive, fairy godmother, what could possibly go wrong? The story is somewhat jumbled at times which can make it hard to follow but for someone wanting a light hearted urban fantasy, this is an easy read. For me, the characters didn't stand out but most reviewers like the book a lot so give it a try.
4.5 stars This was such a fun, quick read, honestly, what a great story. I don't think I have ever read an adult story where the FMC was a fairy godmother, that was such a unique premise! I loved the whimsy mixed with the personal detective aspect and how realistic the sibling dynamic was. The Government corruption made so much sense too, really plausible for this to have been set in reality. Loved it.
I absolutely loved this book. I had never read this author before and the book popped up on my “you might like” feed. The editing is top notch. I did not come across one mistake. I laughed out loud so many times. While I’m waiting for book two I am going to check out other books written by Ms Mason.
Came into this after reading another fantasy book, and while I stuck with it and finished it,I won't be getting the next book in the series.took me two weeks on and off to read it.I'm sure some would love it if it were a Netflix movie or a Hulu series...
I gave this a good go but it's so badly written I just couldn't carry on. It's an absolute mess. Jumps from one thing to another without much rhyme or reason and is almost painful to read. Anyone who writes like they want their story to be on the big screen, should stick to scripts.
A funny book and with twists I never expected. I love how snarky Keira is at times esp when faced with the unknown. And the fact her and her twin sister have twin familiars was adorable.
I never would've expected this to unfold the way it did and I can't wait to see what's next
This is the first vampire fairy story I remember hearing about or reading and I really enjoyed it. I also liked the familiars. There was a lot of action and fun back story for the characters to work through in the storyline. I recommend it.
Enjoyable and thoughtful along with plenty of fun. Awaiting the next outcome is a combination that you are feeling. This is the interaction between the characters and you.
This was different in that it's about a fairy without wings working as a PI and turned into a vampire. The plot and subplots move quickly, although it was a little confusing at times. The characters are well developed and likeable. I can't wait for the next book!
Interesting concept and nice pacing. Quite an enjoyable read for those boring hours we all find ourselves in. I’ve not obsessed over it but I was happy enough to read it and interested enough in the characters to look to read more.
I enjoyed the book. I liked the story. The characters were interesting. It started a little slow, l wasn't sure where it was going but i liked it enough/ it interested me enough to see where it would go. I do want to see what happens to Kiera and Karly next.
I really enjoyed the character's and the world created on this book. There are surprises and twists. The lead character is super relatable. Thoroughly enjoyed and can't wait to read the next one!
This is a fun paranormal mystery with a fur rotten police, politicians, and a godfather with murder, conspiracy, and cover ups—bad seeds and misinformation and manipulation and misunderstandings all with a bit of humour and sass.❣️💃🏻🕵️♀️
I really loved this book and can't wait to read the next ones in the series. The story is great and the characters are so natural. You won't regret reading it.
