The Rest is Silence is a fictional autobiography told by an old man who has had a full life - from a small cottage in Donegal, to the coal pits in Scotland, and ending as a successful and prominent businessman in an American firm. In telling the story, the author uses the "flash-back" technique delightfully and skilfully. The jumps from the present to the past, and from the past to the present are natural and never forced. One is reminded of a garrulous old man who talks on without really knowing whether he is a little boy at school or an old man just waiting for the end. There is humour, too, in plenty - the rich humour typical of the author, that gives the unexpected and incongruous a great meaning.
