Children and Babies with Mood Swings: New Insights for Parents and Professionals

Rate this book
Addressing the challenges of living with a child whose moods are extreme and unpredictable, this book transcends traditional tendencies and diagnoses by discussing mood swings in terms of how they develop, instead of presenting the reader with the usual list of symptoms and treatments. The complex interplay between children's emotional states and the various developmental milestones that lie along the pathway to adulthood are described, offering hope to parents by giving them a whole new way of looking at an old problem that paradoxically seems to be increasing in modern times.

I picked this book up in desperation when I could no longer handle my daughter’s mood swings. Although she is seeing a psychiatrist, a psycho-therapist, and taking medication; we just could not get the mood swings under control. Not being one to just sit and wait, I decided to do some research and stumbled upon this book. I must admit that I am thanking God I did. This past summer has been pure hell. We have added a third medication and talked to the therapist; and finally she seems a little better. I started to follow some of the principles in this book and it helped. I liked how the authors explained bi-polar disorder from infancy and carried it over to the later stages of childhood. I appreciated the three cases that were used as examples. I found myself comparing the first case with that of my daughter. I almost believed that the author was writing about my child, rather than that of a stranger.

I plan on taking the information in this book and using it toward her IEP. I honestly believe it is that useful. It has been very helpful in explaining the inner working of the bi-polar mind and has allowed me to better understand my daughter. Although I realize that our future might be a little bumpy, it seems much brighter. I am very grateful to both authors and appreciate their work. I strongly recommend this book for all parents of children who suffer from mood disorders of any kind, bipolar disorder, or even autism due to the meltdown issues.
