This was a nice book to pass the time with. I honestly wasn't that invested in it while I was reading though. The book consists of three POVs and things don't sync up between the three characters for a while. I ended up only liking two out of the three stories honestly. I liked he characters of Ruth (new mom) and Kirsten (hippish) and didn't care for Claudia at all (I heard this term the other week, she's a mommy blogger).
The main plot is about how three women approach motherhood and marriage or in Kirsten's place, how to deal with a long term partnership. I think Kirsten was my favorite out of h three women. She's dealing with a son who rather be called a girl, a boyfriend who is distant, and two other kids while trying to make money in her family portrait business that leaves her unfilled.
Ruth is a new mother who I would say is suffering from postpartum depression. She is second guessing herself and doesn't know if she can handle going back to work.
Claudia is a mother of twins and lives a life that you would see in GOOP magazine. That's not a compliment. When she starts to wonder about what she's missed out on due to bring focused on goals she has been told all her life to try to achieve, her life is thrown for a loop.
I thought the writing was very good. I have to say the flow wasn't that great though. I think until the three women started to interact more signatures it each other, this red as three distinct stories. Also due to plot, I ended up disliking Claudia a lot based on what Papa did with her character.
The setting of New York worked well with this story. What better than New York to show a bunch of faceless women in competition with each other to be a good mother, partner/wife.
The ending fell a lot flat though. I think Papa wanted to wrap things in a bow. However, due to what came before, it just didn't read as realistic to me. Not that interested in reading the sequel.
A cute book that any mother could identify with. All three moms have varying personalities and parenting styles and the author does a good job not making one seem better than the others.
Another great book by Ariella Papa. She's been one of my favorite authors since "On The Verge"; this book seems to realistically portray what's it like to be a new mom and addresses the relationship issues of people my age. I loved it!
‘Momfriends’ weaves a story about three mothers who struggle with motherhood and other issues in their respective lives. The story is told by giving each character their own alternating chapter using first-person narrative.
There’s Kirsten who takes photographs for a living. Her relationship with her man (since they’re not married) David seems to be deteriorating as he begins to frequently spend longer hours at work and she suspects that he might be cheating on her. Meanwhile, she is concerned about her three-year-old son Sage who constantly wears girls’ clothes. She worries that he will not grow out of it and has to face the judgment of other kids and mothers. Kirsten was probably the most likeable out of the three characters. She came across as relaxed and easygoing.
Claudia is an overachiever working mum. She aims to send her kids to the best school and to continue excelling at her job. She’s uptight and serious. She runs on a schedule and she’s the type who’s hard to get to know. She and her husband Peter aren’t exactly close. They seem to lead their own lives. Then she starts receiving attention from a junior talent agent Keith and she soon becomes embroiled in something that she knows is wrong. I liked Claudia’s seriousness though I think she really needed to be a little more relaxed and of course, .
Ruth is struggling with her son Abe as he cries a lot. She hardly has any time to rest or to even take a shower. Basically her schedule revolves around him. She and her husband Steve aren’t particularly intimate anymore because she’s too tired. Of all the characters, Ruth’s chapters were my least favourite. I just never really found Ruth’s life to be interesting. It’s evident that taking care of Abe is challenging but she just seemed sort of helpless at times. She also seemed to be dependent on the other two.
I liked that the book portrayed three different parenting styles without promoting or criticizing any of it. Instead it stayed neutral and focused on being as realistic as possible while delving into other challenges that they face. Each character’s storyline was concluded satisfactorily as well. Overall, I enjoyed the book more than I expected.
Enjoyable little novel about three very different mothers who become friends in Brooklyn. The characters were well drawn and interesting and the plots were compelling.
I'm not sure I can accurately rank this...it was an entertaining story and an easy read, but since I'm not a middle-class American mother, I'm not really the target demographic for this book. That said, it was enjoyable and a good read for my vacation on the beach.
I could really relate to each of the characters a little bit. I found this book to be a great light read. I'm a mom of four so I was laughing and nodding in agreement. I would definitely recommend this book to my mom friends.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast and easy read. As a mom, I found that, even tho the 3 ladies in this book were so different, I could relate to each one of them.
Cute read. I could definitely relate to the characters as a new mom. 3.5 stars. The author is a decent writer but oh man get an editor please. Staid? Typos are distracting. But would recommend to my new mom friends.
Honestly, this was cute and relatable. I love a good "mom" book and this one fit the bill. Claudia was a tad bit annoying to read about but I made it through to the end. Needs some editing, but I've seen worse.
A really great book BUT it needed some editing to catch some spelling and punctuation. Normally that would put me off but the writing was just really good.
