Classical Scholarship and Cultural Transference: Translations of British, French and German Historiography of Antiquity in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century. an Anthology of Prefaces

Rate this book
The mechanisms at play in the process of exchange between British, French and German intellectual traditions as they attempt to engage with the study of Greek and Roman history are the focus of this unusual anthology. The book makes accessible frequently rare though significant documents which have been collected in the libraries of three countries, and includes introductions to works by authors such as Gibbon, Barthelemy and Droysen, translators' prefaces to their renderings of foreign texts, and periodical reviews. These source texts are preceded by an introduction that explores major developments in the transmission of classical scholarship in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
