Vet Emergencies 24/7 is a non-fiction, middle-grade, children’s book based on the Animal Planet reality show, Emergency Vets, that chronicles the cases of veterinarians at Alameda East Veterinary Hospital in Denver, Colorado. This book begins with an introduction to the clinic and what they do there, as well as the top veterinarians and interns who were working there at the time the book was published (2007). From there, it documents the cases of a number of animal patients with various ailments, including dogs, cats, smaller furry pets, reptiles, and even a couple of zoo animals that were referred by the Denver Zoo. Each case tells about the pet, the doctor treating them, the diagnosis, treatment, and results at follow-up. The book wraps up with some basic things kids might need to know if they’re interested in becoming a vet one day, some of the most common household dangers to pets, animals behavior tips for cats and dogs, animal fun facts, and a helpful glossary of terms that kids might be unfamiliar with.
Overall, I think that Vet Emergencies 24/7 provides kids with a great overview of what it’s like to be a veterinarian, which could help them to determine if this is a career path they might want to pursue in the future. I like how they documented actual patient cases, and that they didn’t just limit it to dogs and cats. There’s a great variety of animals represented throughout the book. There are lots of full-color photographs of the vets in action, helping their animal patients. I also enjoyed the occasional humor the author throws in. The extras at the back of the book provide more information that I’m sure curious kids would find interesting. Despite the book being almost two decades old, it surprisingly didn’t feel dated at all. I think it would still be pretty relevant for kids who are animal lovers or who are exploring the possibility of a career as a veterinarian.

This book was amazing. I loved this book it tell you a lot about what happens. I recommend this book if you want to be a vet. I love how at the end of the book had some information. They had some cases that I cried on. I loved this whole book. if you like the book let me know. Have ad good day.

I loved this book! It has really great stories in it about vets saving animals! I love animals, so I love reading about animals being saved! I'd recommend it for animal lovers and people who want to be vets someday!
