Refractive errors (ametropia) are common.A refractive error is caused by an imbalance between the refractive power of the optical system of the eye and its axial length, rarely to altered refractive power of the cornea (keratoconus, cornea plana) or the lens (nuclear sclerosis, spherophakia).Some eye diseases are more common in myopia (short-sightedness): retinal detachment hyperopia (far-sightedness): angle closure glaucoma, branch vein occlusion, age-related macular degeneration.
