In a world dominated by huge corporations and struggling with pandemics, patterned neutrino signals are detected coming from the Oort Cloud. The most powerful corporation sends a spaceship to investigate but something interferes with the crews during their long journey towards the edge of the solar system. A relief ship is sent manned by officers with hardened conditioning, their mission to find survivors and seize any alien or rival technology, but events lead in unexpected directions.

On Earth a small band of miraculous survivors of one of the rampant diseases is pursued by the same corporation and flees from refuge to refuge, helped by a weakened United Nations.
