This is a handsomely illustrated book with a child's-eye view of participation in the Long March led by Mao Zedong (October 1934 - October 1935). Set during the Chinese Revolution, this is the story of Ling, the poor Chinese boy, who helps the army of peasants on their long march across China - a walk across almost a third of the world. Ling helps to save his village and then becomes himself one of the 'little devils', the children who ran messages for the soldiers. The author and illustrator, Svend Otto S., received the 1978 Hans Christian Andersen Award for illustration.
