Rate this book
When Jim Martini goes back to his WV hometown to see why its major employer failed suddenly he finds more than a failed company. He risks his life, finds a lost love, and stumbles into an international conspiracy. A Chinese revolutionary group is using viruses, hacking, malware and cyber-technology to over-throw its own government and attempt to control the US--by shutting down all forms of computers and communications--all at once. Suddenly nothing works-communications are "silenced". The US is preoccupied fighting global terrorism, so it's up to Jim, hometown friends and a small team of CIA, FBI, and NSA agents to overcome this devastating threat and stop The Chinese Conspiracy. Set in the lush mountains of West Virginia and half-way around the world in China, The Chinese Conspiracy weaves a chilling tale of cyber-terrorism, current events and a tender love story.

I was intrigued by the question on the front of this book, "What happens when nothing works?" I asked this question of my students last year and they really didn't think it was possible for something like this to happen. Then again they were only 8th graders. I found the information I gleaned from this realistic yet fictional book to be quite scary and disturbing. Relations with China over recent years have been strained. Many of the American jobs were outsourced to China. Although this was a fictitious story of how a government tired of their government decides to take over by shutting down world wide networks. The fact that they had cells in the United States was terrifying. Since 9/11 we've seen more and more terrorist cells popping up in the U.S. I personally never considered cyber-terrorism. I've heard of the viruses etc. And to think that for me the though of identity theft over the Internet was scary. People like me who are not real tech savvy will find this book to be an eye-opener. I sat on the edge of my seat wondering how far these people would get before they were stopped or if they would be stopped. I enjoyed this book. I have a friend who will love this book and I will be passing it on to him. I highly recommend this book

What if I couldn’t write this post, read on my Kindle or smartphone, engage my friends on all the social networks I am, tweet to my heart’s content, watch whatever I wanted on demand, or go to the grocery store and do the self-checkout and scan the bar codes? I may survive, but John Mariotti asks some larger, more complex questions in The Chinese Conspiracy. Here is what is between the covers:

I wanted to get this post out while there is still time to reach everyone. Hopefully my internet connections were not shut down before I got it out. If you are reading this, understand that this is a very chilling, technical read that will make you look at anything that touches the internet or electricity in a new way and with new respect. Computers have become a fact of life and the Chinese are plotting against us as I write. If you are Chinese and are at this minute plotting against us, stop reading now please. Moving on, the novel moves at a good pace, made me think a bunch, and gave me a new found respect for cell towers and my love of Google. Take five minutes and just consider how many that you rely on are connected to the internet or cell usage, it is staggering. Give this thought provoking novel a try.

It's my book so obviously I love it. So do many who have read it. Try it and see if it doesn't get you involved. It's fiction but it's plausibly realistic.

(Please note, the Hardcover books listed are now being discontinued because the are old, old editions. The latest edition are the Dec. 2024 paperback and ebook editions--very updated and new!)

Though this book held great promise, the plot was well-thought out and researched, I could not finish this novel. Had it not been for the sex scenes, assault of a physical and sexual nature, the profanity and violence, I think I would have enjoyed this novel.
