Taum was one of the first people who inspired my interest in reading and conducting research in literary studies. This book is one of his earliest works, covering a wide range of literary theories—from formalism to early post-structuralism. It also helped me understand M.H. Abrams’s The Mirror and the Lamp: Romantic Theory and the Critical Tradition in the simplest and most accessible way.
However, this book would benefit from a revised edition, as some of the content feels outdated and lacks engagement with more recent developments in literary theory. Unfortunately, Taum has focused his updates within academic and applied research settings, without revisiting this foundational work for wider or newer audiences. I hope that in the future, Taum will consider revising and republishing this book so that early Indonesian literature students can better understand the development of literary theory—from early formalism to more contemporary approaches like postmodernism—and how these theories apply to Indonesian literature.
