Spicy Detective Stories – 06/38

Rate this book
Produced by the same publisher as D.C. Comics, SPICY DETECTIVE STORIES was the home for Dan Turner, Hollywood Detective and a whole host of other pulp detectives. Drawing on the purple prose and sex appeal, SPICY DETECTIVE STORIES sold well enough that it took censorship to move them off the newsstands and out of business.

COUNTDOWN - Mid-20th Century North American Crime
BOOK/Comic/Animated 181 (of 250)
For high-brow readers, of course:
Having previously ran across Sally the Sleuth, I'd little hope to find more. But Otto Penzler has just released a new collection: "The Big Book of Female Detectives" (2018). There are 2 comic strips here: "Murder with Music" and "Coke with Co-eds". Both are good, but I'll review just one. Guess which. If you're wrong, well...what were you thinking?
Hook - 3 stars: The neckline of Sally's "college-wear" is surely enough to get her into about any college. (Hey, at least she didn't have her parents pay to get her into a college, as in today's news.)
Pace- 4: Sally removes more clothing in each illustration, so don't forget to read the words.
Plot - 3: Sally must save co-eds from coke! Pretty serious stuff, huh? A dealer is fingered and says, "That Big-Mouthed Broad put the finger on me. I'll fix her!" And at the end of the comic strip, Sally and a coed have fallen off a cliff for some reason and lost most of their clothing on the way down. The cured co-ed (oh, I hope I'm not giving too much away) leans in MUCH TOO CLOSE to Sally and says, "No More Dope For Me, Sally," as the rest of her dress starts to fall away. Sally leans in closer and says, "That's wise. I hear that co-eds can have lots of fun without it!" (And Sally should know: she's a big fan of Scrabble I think.) Then, as they sympathize with each other and more clothing falls away, one can only assume Sally hears the bell for her next class.
CAST - 2: You want a cast? Go see "Streetcar Named Desire."
ATMOSPHERE - 2: You want atmosphere? Go read "Anna Karenina."
SUMMARY - 2.8. For what it is, it's a hoot. You gotta check this out. In other of Sally's adventures, some guys lose their clothing too, by the way. (Hey, even the first Tarzan film had a nude Jane AND Tarzan.) Imagine, for many, this is as close to porn as they ever got. Except for that Tarzan movie. Sometimes, you just gotta take a break from the downer noir/hard-boiled stories from this era.
