Cycling Solo: Ireland to Istanbul

In 'Cycling Solo", Trevelyan has found his voice, but the bike is in bits.

29 year old cyclist cartographer Trevelyan is a candid observer as well as a survivor.: camping on a budget of next to nothing while cycling alone for five months. No watch, just a compass and a blog.
From Ireland to Istanbul with forgettable campsites, random kindnesses ,punctures, falls and steep kiolemtres in between, this offbeat quest with the upside down 'Relections of Blogging Bicycology' (at the back) with a home view, is worth sharing.
Quest is his real middle name. Mother-son co-authors are unsuaul collaborators but at three, Trevelyan inspired the now classic picture book 'There's a Hippopotamus on our Roof Eating Cake' and recently helped with Darwin research for the novel 'Outback Ferals'.
Orienteering was a family sport which meant map reading and getting lost were weekly challenges, but the family that writes and explores together, stays together.

'Trail Magic: Going Walkabout for 2184 Miles on the Appalachian Trail' (Brolga) is the 2013 sequel

Most of us haven’t ridden a pushbike since our schooldays. Riding one 9,000km from Ireland to Istanbul sounds like one of those ideas that we might fantasise about, but never actually be mad enough to attempt.

Meet 30-year-old Darwinite Trevelyan Quest Edwards, who surprisingly didn’t assume his middle name just for his odyssey. What started as a blog to keep Trev’s family updated on his exploits grew to a sprawling, 180 page account of the horrors of fried gammon and why black Audis generally contain the most inconsiderate drivers in Europe.

Trev was obviously exhausted by the end of his intercontinental exploits, and this reflects in the length of his posts. Ireland and Scotland take up half of the book. It’s a pity the journey wasn’t reversed, and more space given to descriptions of Turkey and the Balkan States.

Cycling Solo captures the wide-eyed wonder of the novice tourist, salted with the saddle-sore cynicism of an experienced traveller. Trev is a cartographer by trade, so his prose has refreshing direction. It’s the kind of writing that might help an infrequent reader love books again.

This is an interesting and humorous book, adapted from the blog entries of Trevelyan Edwards as he embarked on a solo cycling trip from Ireland to Istanbul.

Enduring all kinds of weather, and strange looks from locals, Trevelyan made the trip with a minimal budget, a compass and often misleading tourist maps.

This is a great book for adventure and travel enthusiasts.

A great cheer up antidote after reading A Fine Balance! The great read for cyclists in adventurers. I would have loved more detail about the cities and cultural stuff, but you can't have everything when you're trying to make it to Istanbul to catch a flight.
