Renee Weisman was a Distinguished Engineer and Director of Engineering at IBM Corporation prior to retiring in 2008. Having spent nearly forty years in the heavily male dominated semiconductor engineering industry (often as the only woman), Renee learned firsthand how women can hold themselves back. The owner of Winning at Work Consulting, Renee now teaches companies how to make gender differences in the workplace a business advantage

SWE-D Book Club April 2011

I saw this author give a presentation at our SWE-Detroit 2010 Professional Development Conference. Since I enjoyed her presentation so much, I decided to buy her book...I normally don't do that when I see speakers.

The only word I can use to describe this book is "Wow". Any woman that works in a corporate environment, especially female enginerds, would greatly benefit from reading this book. I had numerous "Aha! I'm not the only one!" moments while reading it. I also feel like I read this at the perfect time in my life, when I am trying to seriously think about short- and long-term career planning, not to mention the same for my personal life. She provides sound advice on that topic, as well as how women communicate in the workplace vs. men, negotiating for a raise/promotion, and other things that white-collar women generally secretly struggle with.

***I just reread it in 2011, a year later. I felt the material was still relevant to me and it was worth rereading, which is rarely the case when I read PD books.

I wrote this book to help others learn from my forty years in industry and education. It is written by a scientist and gives advice in a practical and tested manner that everyone can use, male or female. If you are just starting out, if your career has stalled, if you are having trouble with work-life "fit", if you are afraid to negotiate for yourself, if you need help standing up to that difficult person... you will find that advice and much more.

I've met Renee through the Society of Women Engineers. What she has achieved is nothing short of remarkable! I recommend this book to any young professional women entering the workforce or a mid career women. Especially Engineers!

I think this is a most read for all women AND men. Especially men who work with women or manage women. Very insightful.
