Trauma-victim Helena Winter is a young and beautiful ‘Sleeping Beauty’, lying prone and unable to communicate as she’s cared for in a private hospital ward. Utterly alone with her locked-in reality, no one has a clue what is going on inside her head. While lying in her bed, she’s sexually ravaged by Tomas, who, through a rent in the fabric of space and time, transports Helena to a new world, a world as tangible and real as the one she leaves behind. There, he sells her to a slaver, and she wanders through a nightmarish ‘yellow-brick road’ adventure peopled with allies and enemies, exploring the fabulous outer reaches of her own submissive sexuality.
In the dungeons of the slave house, she is inducted and trained as the abject sex-slave “Lana”. She’s pierced, ringed, and then auctioned at one of the great fairs in her new world. Once sold, she’s taken to the home of Homere Homere, a wealthy merchant, where her secretarial skills are put to use, along with her intimate duties as a sex slave. Later she is given to one of Homere’s powerful patrons and customers, Darrick, and is taken to his desert palace. Jealousies abound in Darrick’s world and among his other slaves. Soon Lana is left to in the care of the cruel Kadin Salih, Darrick’s first wife. She hacks off Lana’s hair and condemns her to a lingering death, toiling in a pit pushing the shaft of a water wheel, and denied food and nutrition. Will this be her end?
When Helena appears to re-awaken in her hospital bed, just as Tomas finishes fucking her, he suddenly dissolves into the ether. She appears to have recovered, and yet, the cast of people she now encounters are the same ones she encountered in her sexual adventures. Her dreams are wracked with visions of Tomas, of servant's cells, whips and chains, and she cannot let go of the wild experiences of alternative life. Inner and outer worlds begin to meld into one until the astonishing conclusion of this unique novel, when Helena (Lana) finally understands where she truly belongs.
This one just didn't do much for me. It wasn't downright terrible (which would have netted it one star) - but the descriptions left a lot to be desired. Most of the Corporal Punishment scenes were talked about and not shown so well. The concept was fascinating - but I found it a little hard to follow at times with what was going on. I am also not the biggest fan of constant backtracking through remembering the past as it throws me out of a book easily.
However there were times when the scenes were expanded more. I like non-con but there are much better choices out there than this one. I felt like it was a bit "senseless" and by that I mean I didn't really ever feel what the characters felt. In BDSM or capture type scenario that is something that really enhances the readers experience. Frankly it makes it more arousing. So 2 stars for it's o.k. only.
