Rate this book
Raptor Ravine is an adventure novel with the heart of E.T. and the tension of Jurassic Park set in the Oregon Coast Mountains. A boy fleeing a cougar attack falls into an ancient ravine and returns home with a mysterious new pet. The creature causes conflict in his family and entanglements with his friends as they struggle to care for it and find out what it is. Native American friends stir emotions with legends of a spirit beast that haunts the ravine. But when a paleontologist identifies it as something related to the dinosaur age, family and friends join together in the fight to protect the creature and its home. It takes a heroic stand by the boy in a primeval forest to convince the owner of the ravine it must be saved from exploitation.

Raptor Ravine was written by James Butler and his nine-year-old son. I think the effort was commendable. This 250+ page novel is mostly meant to be read by children but adults will certainly enjoy it, I did. It is action-packed from beginning to end. One of the main themes centers around the friendship of three children, Ashley, Trik and Gerry, with all its ups and downs. The characters are realistic, not like some of the cardboard characters we often see in other novels. The dialogue is real, not stilted. I would have given Raptor Ravine five stars but realistically the editing is off. Other than that the story is very entertaining. I like the cover of the book except the title is in red on a dark background making it tough to read for anyone who is colorblind (like me).

Hello Mr. Butler!

My name is Joanie Jones. I am the teacher at Mist Grade School in Mist, Oregon. I teach 21 students in grades K-5. You sent our little school a copy of Raptor Ravine a couple years back. Please forgive my tardiness with this thank you. I wanted to read the book first before I read it to the class. My son and I read it at home first. He was in 4th grade at the time. It was his first rather large and difficult chapter book he read...and he plowed right through it! He couldn't wait to read it at night with me. He would read, then I would read, and then he didn't wait for me any longer to get to his room at night! He finished it on his own! Then my older son took it and plowed through it. I set the book aside after this and forgot about it until this spring.

We were studying Northwest plants and animals in our area this winter at school and I thought about your book. The book had left a good image in my mind about the setting and the surrounding area around our school. And even though it is fiction with dinosaurs, I thought it would be fun to read. Needless to say the students loved the book!!! They were all ears during story time. All of them, Kindergarten through fifth! They were quite taken and thrilled with hearing the words Mist, Mist Elementary School, Vernonia, Clatskanie, etc. They loved little Apollo and how she acted. They loved Trik and his adventure. They liked how Trick never gave up on his pet or friends.

Thank you for thinking of us. Your thoughtfulness was greatly appreciated. The students wrote you letters and I would like to send them to you. Is there an address that would be best to use? If you are ever in our area during the school year please let us know. The students would be thrilled to meet you and would ask you a million questions about your book!

Do take care and thanks again!

Sincerely,
Joanie Jones

This review is by my oldest and in their- own words:

"AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME"

"I loved the book. At first it sounded realistic then as went on reading it switched to fantasy because of the creature. I like the entire story just by itself and that the story uses different types of story elements. I think kids 9+ should read the book."

Once my oldest started reading the book, F finished the book within three hours from beginning to end.

F gave it "5 STARS". Definitely a great book for boys and girls.

Thank you to the author for sending us a copy of the book for our honest review.
