Haunted Echoes

Sarah Reddington traveled to far-away Maine to escape the chaos of the windy city. She wanted to concentrate on completing her novel and enjoy the peaceful quiet of the Atlantic's craggy shore. Although she was the only registered guest staying in an elegant, but quaint Victorian Inn, subsequent events quickly placed her writing on hold. The haunting cries that echoed around her made her question not only her own mortality, but made it difficult for her to decipher between fiction and insanity. This is an old-fashioned ghost story through-and-through that will keep you guessing until the last written word.

Having written her first “book” at age 10, author and independent publisher, Julie Ann James, has nurtured a lifelong passion for seeing her words in print. This enduring trait has helped her relate to hundreds of authors whom she has facilitated publishing their own works.

The mother of three, Julie Ann birthed her first paid article shortly before delivering her second son, receiving a $25 check for “Don’t Play Beat the Clock: Get Organized,” which appeared in a California parenting magazine.

So thrilled that she did not even cash the check, Julie Ann went on to write a book called, “Mommy Talk,” about successful parenting. Spurred on by the need to care for her own young children and still foster her entrepreneurial spirit, she started a successful child daycare center and crafts business right in the comfort of her own home. And, of course, she continued to write, dreaming of the day when she would become a recognized author.

To realize yet another dream, at age 36, she went back to school to earn her teaching degree in early childhood education. While aspiring to this distant goal, she helped out at her parents’ store on St. Armand’s Circle in Sarasota and was inspired to write an imaginative children’s tale, “The Little Shoppe on Filmore Street.” Subsequently, she created a charming collection of children’s stories entitled, “It’s Rhyming Peas and Carrots”, which later became “Mrs. Owl’s Nest of Rhymes.” This latter publication included the story, “The Pepper Tree, How the Seeds Were Planted”, which later provided the name for her soon to be born literary magazine and publishing house.

In 2003, Julie Ann and her family began discussing starting a family business. Intrigued at the idea, she did her research and founded a fledgling literary magazine, which did stir her passion. In September 2004, Julie Ann launched the first issue of “The Pepper Tree, A Literary Magazine in Sarasota, while still teaching pre-school.

Working with authors to produce that first issue helped her resolve to use her own publishing experience as an author of her own books to help other writers. She placed an ad in “The Pepper Tree Magazine” announcing the opening of The Peppertree Press in 2006. “I was meeting and greeting people at southern Florida bookstore coffee shops and working out of the trunk of my car,” Julie Ann said. “After publishing seven authors I came to the realization that my career path had shifted toward becoming a successful publisher, so she retired from teaching and dove straight into the publishing industry.

Her decision has enhanced our local Sarasota literary scene, as well as brought national recognition for her efforts. She has published books of every genre for hundreds of authors.

To date her publishing company has published 400 titles thanks to an amazing, hard working and dedicated team. Teri Franco, Editorial Director started working at the Peppertree Press in the summer of 2006 and together they have planted seeds all over the globe. Becky Barbier, Graphic Designer came on board with the Peppertree Press in 2007 and has designed many books with her creative expertise. Liz Peters, Graphic Designer has joined the team and created book covers/interiors and promotional materials for the company. The Peppertree Press has taken root and is branching out worldwide.

Julie Ann is not only the publisher and founder of her own literary magazine and book publishing company; she is also an avid speaker where she has the opportunity to travel to a variety of writers groups, schools and organizations. Her talk appropriately titled, “From Manuscript to Masterpiece” consists of the simple steps on how to become a published author from start to finish. In 2009, Julie Ann finished yet another children's book dedicated to librarian’s everywhere, "Finnigan the Dragon."

In 2010, Julie Ann published her first novel, “Haunted Echoes,” a paranormal tale of e

It all starts with a storm, flickering lights, and the power going out. Then comes the strange sounds and the sense that someone is in the room with her. Ahh, the beginning of a chilling ghost story.

I made the mistake of reading this late at night. I devoured the book within hours. Chills ran down my spine and my stomach knotted up. Yes, I was definitely engaged in this story. A supernatural suspense book is right up my reading alley.

Now, as much as I loved this book, I got a little confused in some parts. You have to really pay attention at certain points of the book or you'll get lost. Despite that, Haunted Echoes was a page turner. Riveting and chilling, Julie Ann Howell won me over as a fan.

If you enjoy a haunting tale of ghosts and suspense, then pick up this book- if you're not afraid...

Well, this was a fast read. I finished this book in a few hours. But I had to stop. I was reading late into the night and I kept hearing things. LOL It's a really good ghost story. Makes your imagination work over time. Sarah shows up at this B & B for a few weeks. When she gets there the key is in the door and the house is beautiful. She's the only guest and nobody is there to run the place. That would have sent up a red flag to me. Then she starts seeing people and hearing voices. Doors opening on their own and furniture moving. Sarah starts to investigate the inn and finds out 2 people were murdered there in the 1800's. That's about all I can say about this book. I don't want to give it away. But there is a surprise ending to this book. So if you have a chance to pick this book up and you really like a good old fashioned ghost story, I recommend you read it.

NOTE: There are minor spoilers!

I truly enjoyed reading Haunted Echoes. The book is short, only two hundred and two pages. I loved the descriptions of the Otter Cove Inn. Author Julie Ann Howell does a beautiful job of bringing the scenes vividly to life throughout the novel. I felt like I was immersed in the story. I also loved the suspense. Howell kept you longing to read more, to keep tracking down the clues along with Sarah to find out the truth. The pace of the book was great for most of the book until the chapters where Sarah’s sister Abbey comes into play then the pacing started feeling too rushed.

As much as I enjoyed the book, I was disappointed with the last forty pages only because they were very rushed. The ending only made sense to me after I read it three times. I would have preferred Howell had taken more time to develop the last few pages better. As a reader I would have wanted to see what Sarah was going through once she had gotten taken by the spirit. I also would have wanted the scene where Abby and the Riley (the police officfer) go in to try to save her better developed. The scene just goes straight from them entering the house to finding Abby’s daughter (which had only been taken a few pages before) and then to Sarah being saved. The ending wasn’t developed enough. I felt like I was gipped to a degree. But I did enjoy the very last scene of the book (once I reread the ending three times and understood what the heck happened)! That was a very cool way to end the book. Very surprising and made me wish Howell would write a sequel somehow to Haunted Echoes.

Haunted Echoes is an all around old-fashioned ghost story, as it promises to be, but the ending gives it a very nice twist you wouldn’t have expected. This book is well worth the time to read! Trust me, you won’t regret it!

If you did not get enough of the ghost stories during the month of October then I recommend you pick up Haunted Echoes by Julie Ann Howell. I have not read a classic ghost story in such a long time and this one has all of the elements! A creepy haunted house in a small town off the coast of Maine, ghosts who move skeleton keys and terrorize the dog, an author on retreat to write her next book and townspeople who will not tell her what is wrong with the bed and breakfast in which she is staying.....these elements wrap up into a ghost story that will have you hiding under the covers and looking under the eaves of the porch!
