Used this book as our guide to a weeklong vacation in the Smokies and it provided GREAT information and pictures to help us select, plan, and execute four very different, beautiful day hikes. I will also use it to guide me through an overnight in the future.

Maps need to be supplemented with actual trail maps - he provides VERY rough outlines - but excellent directions on how to access the trails and the park is well-maintained.

This book offers a good outline of suggested hikes for people interested in both day hikes and those looking for longer more difficult trails. It provides detail on the elevation and anecdotes on what can be viewed on the trails. It is highly recommended for anybody looking to hit the trails in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. Also, don't forget to purchase a National Geographic map that includes detailed elevation contour lines.

As a GSMNP area local, I would highly recommend this book. Though by now some of the trails may have changed slighty (storms knocking trees down, fires, closures for bear activity), it is still very informative, and an excellent guide to plan by. If you are not sure you can make it to the park, don't buy this book. Reading about these hikes will make your skin crawl with desire to hit the trails.
