Madeleine's job at the British Embassy in a Latin American country was fascinating & challenging—but marred by the harshly critical attitude of one of the senior officials, James Fitzgerald. Unfortunately, a series of mishaps confirmed his low opinion of her.

But were they really mishaps, or something far more sinister?

Madeleine travels to South America as temporary secretary at the British Consulate there. It started well and I thought that this could have been an interesting romance but unfortunately I didn’t buy into the supposed love between the heroine and the hero.

An undemanding book, but the love interest is not very vivid and there is a rescue scene in there that defies belief. Still, decent vintage Harlequin!
